At Marlboro’s words, the nobles who had been chatting in small groups gathered with their children. Marlboro and Laila stood side by side, facing the assembled nobles with their backs to the cake.

Everyone held their breath, watching I Wan’s tiny hands move over the items, wondering what he would choose.

Philip and I watched with great anticipation, though I secretly hoped he wouldn’t pick the crown Marlboro had placed there.

“Oh!”

A small cheer rose from the crowd. I Wan had grasped the quill pen and a gold coin. It was fortunate he hadn’t taken the crown.

“I Wan will grow up to earn the honor of a scholar and great wealth.”

The crowd applauded at my interpretation, offering words like “Congratulations!” and “How wonderful!”
