Polter realized that Ellen’s choice was not simply a bluff, and that he had made a big mistake by failing to recognize a noble person.
“Please, please spare me!”
Polter stumbled to block Count Philip Morris.
“The Countess is safe!”
“Where is Ellen?”
Count Morris emotionlessly drove the stone he was holding into the ground.
The stone stuck halfway into the cave floor with a sharp snap!
It was truly an astonishing sight.
Polter prostrated himself before Count Morris.
“The Countess has shown us, who were foolish and starving, mercy as vast as the sea.”
“Mercy?”
“She graciously provided us with food and went to take care of some work!”
Polter gauged Count Morris’s mood. The terrifying purple aura had subsided.
‘Now is the chance to persuade him! Only then can we all live!’
Polter mustered all his strength to plead with Count Morris.
“Please forgive our rudeness! We are not the enemies of the Countess! We are pitiful souls to be safely gathered into the hands of the Countess!”
One of Count Morris’s eyebrows twitched.
“What?”
“I will explain everything, my Lord.”
Count Morris slowly stroked the neck of Blank beside him and listened to what had happened to Ellen.
Polter explained in detail where his gang had come from, what offer had been made by Ellen.
But he could not convey the words, ‘That I would become the obsessive object of vengeance for Count Morris, who is madly in love with me!’
His limbs went weak at the thought of saying it directly.
Nevertheless, Polter found hope in Count Morris’s gradually calming expression.
He also resolved to pledge absolute loyalty when the Countess came, and to lay his bones as a member of the Morris territory.
“That’s what happened. If we had known beforehand that the lady’s husband was coming, we would have bowed our heads from the beginning.”
“You didn’t know who I was even though I told you?”
‘Damn!’
That was true. Philip had certainly revealed his identity. It was Polter who had boasted.
‘I shouldn’t have said that.’
Cold sweat dripped from his forehead.
He was really in a quandary about how to answer and overcome this crisis.
Then Blank nuzzled Philip’s elbow.
At Blank’s sign, asking to be petted, Philip’s expression softened slightly.
While watching Philip stroke Blank’s head, Polter was struck with an idea.
“My Lord, the distance between you and this place is so great that we mistook you for an impostor!”
“Impostor?”
“Isn’t it hard to think that you would walk a dog this far?”
Of course, Polter didn’t find Philip’s behavior incomprehensible either.
‘If you are madly in love, you can do that.’
Philip closed his mouth for a moment. Polter thought his lame excuse had worked and eagerly nodded his head.
[This is the time separator]Philip didn’t completely believe the words of the bandit leader.
But it was clear that this man had met Ellen and the knights. The number of bandits reported and the number of people in the cave now were also different.
‘How strange.’
While considering, Blank perked up his ears and stood, letting out a low howl. He was guarding the entrance of the cave.
Soon, men with a damp and fierce aura entered the cave.
“What? What are all these? I leave the forest for a few days, and there are beggars here?”
Those who had been quietly listening to the conversation between Philip and Polter became noisy.
‘One, two, three…….’
Exactly ten of them. Philip sensed that they were the bandits he had heard rumors about.
“Wow, there are women too?”
“There’s a richlooking gentleman there.”
“Hey, nice dog, huh?”
“Are you bandits?”
At Philip’s question, they revealed their wicked smiles and laughed.
“What’s a bandit, a bandit.”
“Should be called Bandit Lord.”
“It would be better if you called us Your Majesty? Hee hee!”
“Come on, let’s see what you’ve got?”
The bandits each said something and drew their glittering swords.
“Blank, sit.”
Philip ordered Blank to sit for a simple reason. Because he was Ellen’s dog.
‘If he gets hurt while I took him for a walk, it would be a big problem.’
“Woof.”
Blank sat next to Polter.
Polter and the men tried to stand up, staggering with their bruised bodies, pretending to aid Philip in his confrontation with the bandits.
“Sit down, all of you.”
At Philip’s low voice, they sat down even faster than a blink. It didn’t take long for Philip alone to subdue the real bandits.
The bandits were no different from Polter’s party.
They started to cry in terror, and now they lay flat on the floor, begging, vowing to live upright lives.
But Philip had no intention of sparing them. The bandits had a clear guilt.
Soon, all the bandits were captured.
“So when did Ellen leave?”
Calculating the time for a moment, Polter managed a smile and answered Philip’s question.
“Probably within 30 minutes to an hour?”
Dried blood clung to Polter’s nose and beard, and a dark bruise was forming where he had been struck.
Philip then shifted his gaze. Every adult male was somewhere battered.
Cold sweat naturally broke out on Philip’s forehead.
Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away
This is also on my reread list!
This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.
Definitely worth a read, y’all!
The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.
But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.
Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.
I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.
The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.
As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
