The cane whirled through the air and struck the assassin squarely on the shoulder. Aracila had aimed for the head.

Though the blow was rather weak and inflicted little damage, it was enough to buy Damian a few crucial seconds.

He swiftly regained his stance and counterattacked the assassin with terrifying speed. Thud. The sharp blade pierced the assassin’s heart.

With the last assassin now dealt with, Aracila rushed frantically toward Damian.

“Damian, are you all right?!”

“Yes, I’m fine.”

Damian exhaled sharply and turned his body. Aracila, her tightly bound hair now loosely undone, reached his side.

“How about you, my lady?”

“I’m fine too. Are you absolutely sure you’re not hurt anywhere?”

“No, I’m not.”

But Aracila couldn’t trust his words. She boldly ran her hands over his hunting attire, whose dark fabric hid any potential wounds from view.

Embarrassed by her touch—like she was searching for treasure—Damian’s ears flushed red.

“W-What are you doing?”

“I’m checking if you’re lying about not being hurt.”

Relieved to find no blood or torn fabric, Aracila let out a sigh. Damian had been fighting at the front, so she’d worried he might have gotten injured when her barrier vanished—if so, it would’ve been her fault.
