Audrey was flustered by the absurd accusation. Why on earth had Amy’s necklace turned up in her own room?

“This is ridiculous! I’ve never even seen Amy’s necklace!”

“Then why did the necklace turn up in your room? You’re the mistress’s favored maid—everyone knows you have your own private room.”

One of the maids sneered. As the personal maid to the mistress, Audrey received special treatment and occupied the largest single room.

That had been convenient for serving Aracila, but now it worked against her—since she was alone in the room, no one could have planted the necklace there.

“I really didn’t steal it!”

“Still trying to squirm out of it, Audrey? Everyone knows you’ve been arrogant all along, riding on the mistress’s favor!”

“What nonsense….”

Audrey’s head spun. She had always been extra careful, knowing her behavior directly reflected on Aracila’s reputation.

She’d even endured the other maids deliberately excluding and ignoring her, without complaining to anyone.

“But even so, it’s too much to brazenly lay hands on my mother’s keepsake!”

Amy cried out through tears. For the first time, Audrey realized that when someone is utterly shocked, words simply won’t come out.

“No… I really didn’t do it!”

“Stop lying! When did you ever care about us before? But the moment you saw a pretty necklace, you snatched it up—how vulgar!”

Amid the fierce onslaught from Amy’s faction, murmurs in the dining hall grew louder and louder. Unfortunately, the tide of opinion clearly turned against Audrey.
