The scratch of the ink pen against paper ceased. The man set his pen down on the desk in his office and opened his mouth.

“If you keep staring at me like that…”

Startled by his low voice, she hastily lifted the book she’d been holding to cover her face. Her movement was like that of a startled deer hiding in tall grass.

Her white earlobes, which she hadn’t managed to conceal, flushed crimson—clearly betraying the flustered expression she must be wearing behind the book.

Watching her, the man’s eyes narrowed like those of a predator, amusement flickering in them. He rose quietly from his seat to finish what he’d started to say.

“I absolutely can’t concentrate like this.”

He had already moved behind the sofa where she sat and now leaned down, gripping both armrests with his hands.

“Tell me, Aidel.”

His breath brushed against her nape as if he were embracing her from behind, making every fine hair on her sensitive skin stand rigidly on end.

“Don’t tell me you came here just to spy on me?”

“…That’s impossible.”

“Then why did you come looking for me like this?”

“You said it yourself just a moment ago—that once your official duties were done, you wanted to consult me about something…”

Aidel, her neck now flushed as red as her ears, replied in a faintly trembling voice. Kaeron responded by gently whispering into her ear with a lazy smile.

“I told you already—if you keep staring at me like that, I simply can’t focus.”
