Inside the director’s office of the church orphanage, Aidel sat at her desk, repeatedly writing and erasing with her pen.

Spread out before her on the notebook were the orphanage’s current budget and the list of expenditures that needed to be carried out.

‘What should I do about this…?’

Having started helping with the orphanage’s household affairs, Aidel had unexpectedly ended up assisting with administrative duties as well. Although she had anticipated difficulties, the stark insufficiency of their funds still drew a heavy sigh from her.

No matter how she tried adjusting—cutting wherever possible within the allocated budget and redistributing to essential needs—it remained painfully inadequate.

This sense of scarcity was something she had never once experienced while handling administrative tasks at the Grand Duke’s household. It dawned on her anew just how abundantly privileged her previous life had been.

Having left the Grand Duke’s household without taking anything with her, she had mentally prepared herself for changes in sleeping arrangements, meals, and strenuous daily labor.

‘I can endure it, but…’

The more she lived alongside the orphanage children, the more she felt the ache in her chest as their pure and warm affection touched her heart. The children were barely scraping by, surviving on only the barest necessities funded by the limited donations the church received.

‘I want to help these children.’

Just as she had once helped the church orphanage back in Maris, she wished to support these children, too, so they could grow up in a better environment.

Yet, all she could do right now was assist with the orphanage’s daily tasks and teach the children.

In truth, even that was proving difficult. Although her intention to educate the children was admirable, teaching required resources—and the orphanage’s current budget couldn’t even afford to give every child a single notebook or pencil.

Just as Aidel’s eyes darkened under the weight of her worries, the office door opened, and Mother Superior entered, her face flushed with unmistakable delight.

“Aidel Teacher!”
