Time flowed swiftly.

Outside the window, the scenery of red leaves falling had changed day by day. Gregory’s footsteps, which had been gazing wistfully through the window as he walked down the corridor, soon stopped before a certain door.

Just as he was about to knock, someone who had visited earlier emerged from the room, dragging a tray. It was Marline, wearing an expression as though burdened by the worries of the entire world.

“Lady Marline….”

“Sir Gregory….”

Like a broken wind-up toy, today repeated yesterday exactly as before. Though the seasons changed and all things transformed, time in the Grand Duke’s household seemed frozen in place.

Gregory’s gaze fell upon the tray Marline was dragging out. At a glance, the food on the plate remained untouched, exactly as the head chef had meticulously prepared it.

“It seems His Grace has refused meals again today.”

“What can I possibly do? No matter how much I plead, he absolutely won’t listen to a word I say.”

With a face filled with desperate anxiety, Marline asked Gregory the same question she had asked yesterday.

“Is there still no news of Her Grace’s return?”

“…No, not yet.”

“She left so suddenly, without any prior notice… I understand she must have had urgent business….”

Marline let out a deep sigh. By order of the Grand Duke, the Grand Duchess’s absence had been publicly attributed to an emergency trip.

The servants, unaware that the marriage between the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess was merely contractual, anxiously counted the days, hoping the Grand Duchess would return as soon as possible.
