Sharti walked home happily holding Tain’s hand.

She wanted to go straight down to the village to meet Birena now that she’d met Tain, but she had too much luggage.

Above all, after such a long period of sleeping outdoors, her appearance was shabby and unseemly.

“—So, there was an herb I didn’t recognize in my homework, and I’ve been looking for it!”

Even during Sharti’s absence, Tain had diligently worked on the assignments she’d given him.

Whenever he encountered something unfamiliar or had questions, Tain faithfully climbed the mountain again and again, passionately studying medicinal herbs.

That was how he spent each day waiting for Sharti.

Tain also beamed brightly as he received her gentle touch wiping the dirt off his cheek. He’d missed the scent of winter wind and herbs that always clung to his teacher’s hands.

“Still, Tain, you mustn’t climb the mountain alone.”

He might run into beasts hunting for prey late at night.

“Yes!”

Tain replied loudly. Then, with expectant eyes, he waited eagerly for Sharti’s next words.

It was the pure, trusting look of a child who believed without doubt that lessons would resume right away now that Sharti had returned.
