Wizards, dressed similarly to Sharti, nodded hesitantly, mirroring her attire.
“It’s challenging right now. Precisely, we need to absorb the mana from the patients’ bodies, but we are currently full of mana ourselves.”
“We have to deplete our magical power first before we can extract mana from them.”
“Even that is difficult all at once.”
In other words, until support arrives from Matop, they could prioritize saving high-risk patients.
One of the wizards stepped forward.
“Let me give you an example.”
The wizard raised his staff toward Sharti.
Appearing as if he was going to attack, Ren immediately stood in front of Sharti.
“What are you trying to do to my master?”
“Oh, no, I was just trying to show an example.”
Intimidated by Ren’s imposing presence, the wizard shrunk his shoulders in fear.
Watching the standoff between the two, Bireta scoffed as if finding it pathetic.
“Step aside, you.”
“If you want to show an example, do it to me. My master is off-limits.”
“That bastard…”
Bireta’s gaze toward Ren, who still lacked manners, was irritating.
Sharti couldn’t raise her head due to Ren’s overprotectiveness.
“Fine, fine! Should I do it to that man over there?”
Eventually, the wizard aimed his staff at Ren and began casting.
The staff gathered a radiant mana light.
“Wow…”
“It’s… magic.”
Various exclamations flowed around.
In that moment when everyone’s expectations were concentrated, the wizard raised the staff high.
Mana light swelled, as if it would burst out at any moment.
“…?”
But that was the end of it.
“What? The light disappeared suddenly.”
“Wait. Now the condition of that teacher who assisted should have changed. He cast a spell, right?”
The wizard’s expression began to look uncertain amidst the anticipation around him.
His fellow wizards also exchanged ambiguous glances, alternating their gazes between Ren.
“What did you do?”
Ren tilted his head, not asking what was done but what was intended to be done.
The one who was confused was the wizard.
“S-something’s odd…? It should have enveloped your face with magic… Why did it disappear?”
“Did you try to cast on that man? Why did the magic vanish? Did you make a mistake out of fear?”
“T-that can’t be!”
Ren assumed a pitiful posture, looking disdainfully at the confused wizard.
Sharti wondered what was going on and looked at Bireta. Even in Bireta’s view, something strange was happening.
“W-wait a moment! Hehe, it seems like I made a mistake!”
The wizard, who mumbled that it was a small mistake due to lack of concentration, aimed the staff at Ren again.
Once again, the light gathered just like a while ago, but this time, that was all there was to it.
“Huh, what?”
“Ugh, let me try.”
Other mercenary wizards stepped forward, but the more they did, the more people looked at them with suspicion.
…?
Ren wasn’t affected by the magic.
“You’re not very skilled.”
Ren’s disdainful evaluation made the wizards clench their staffs, trembling.
Even the watching villagers displayed a disappointed look.
“Hmm…”
Only Bireta observed Ren attentively with a sinking gaze.
“This doesn’t make sense!”
A confident wizard member, bursting with enthusiasm, raised his staff, claiming he made a mistake, aiming it at Ren again.
With a sound of concentration, the wizard swung the staff down from the air.
“Now, where…!”
Ren sensed something strange, but before that, the light generated from the staff shot out. However, this time, the target was not Ren but Sharti. This time, the light enveloped Sharti’s body, and a short-lived magic circle appeared around her face before disappearing.
The wizard seemed pleased with the apparent success of the spell.
‘…There doesn’t seem to be anything strange?’
Sharti checked her physical condition, looking around with a bewildered expression. Ren remained silent, and he didn’t seem to notice anything unusual.
At that moment, the wizard pointed at Sharti’s hood.
“Take off your hood! I cast a face-altering spell!”
…!
Sharti, surprised, touched her face.
It was evident that the contours of her face had changed.
“Let me see.”
Bireta, staying behind the crowd, examined Sharti’s face with a sunken gaze. Afterward, he smirked.
‘Is there something wrong?’
Sharti, with an unsure look, met Bireta’s eyes. Instead of answering, Bireta slowly removed her hood.
Jet-black curly hair spilled out from the hood. Not only her face but also the color of her hair had changed.
When Sharti looked puzzled, the wizard kindly conjured a mirror with magic.
‘Even the eye color has changed.’
The crimson eyes had turned into a calm and subtle violet.
Even the slightly upturned eyes gave a sensitive impression.
‘Wow…’
Sharti, amazed, touched her face in the mirror.
She had truly become a different person. This seemed more like transformation magic than mere alteration.
Glancing around without any barriers, everyone stared at Sharti with curious faces.
When Sharti met Ren’s eyes without hiding, she felt a small thrill and turned her head abruptly.
‘What do you think, Ren?’
Sharti looked at Ren with a bright smile.
However, when their eyes met, Ren’s expression wasn’t as positive as expected.
When male lead is the homewrecker
“I know she doesn’t love him.”
I’ve read the novel below twice already. Girls, I’m highly recommending it to you!
The female lead? Not a good person.
The second male lead? Not a good person.
The male lead? Willingly plays the third party, breaking up the female and second male lead’s relationship despite all the warnings from his friends—so yeah, he’s definitely not a good person either.
Basically, nobody in this novel is simple-minded or without scheming.
The female lead starts off as the male lead’s secretary, but don’t worry—later on, she takes over the company while the male lead steps back to support her. He won’t steal her spotlight, overshadow her, or dull her shine.
I love novels where men are out here snatching wigs, tearing each other down, and going to war just to win the female lead’s affection. And this is exactly that kind of novel. Most of Hai Dai Ran’s works have this dynamic. You’ll see the male characters’ emotions being pushed to the absolute extreme.
There’s even a scene where the second male lead exposes the male lead online for being a homewrecker. The brotherhood immediately gangs up on him, dragging him through the mud. I find it compelling —it completely flips reality on its head, where usually, women are the ones fighting over a man and getting torn apart by the sisterhood.
For me, female leads in the novels I read should only struggle in their careers, not in love. But if the brainless romantics in the story are all men? I have zero complaints.
I’ve pretty much read all of Hai Dai Ran’s novels and even translated all of them—her works are just my thing. I’ll slowly upload everything here. One day, when my website is official, I hope I can invite her to join as one of the star authors.
