Asiel was clearly trying his best to keep Ruth and himself far apart. Judging by his words and actions, Asiel seemed to believe that he was hurting Ruth.
“Why does Ruth hurt?”
“Dad said so.”
“Dad didn’t hurt Ruth.”
“Don’t talk!”

Herdin, exasperated, let out a dry chuckle, then met Blair’s amused gaze and surrendered with a smile.
