Herdin stepped out of the bathroom, a towel draped over his still-damp hair.

Late afternoon sunlight spilled into the corridor. It was the hour when shadows beneath one’s feet began to stretch ever longer.

Towel in hand, Herdin roughly dried his hair as he headed toward Blair’s bedroom—so naturally it seemed second nature.

Just as he turned into the hallway where Blair’s room was located, he overheard the hushed whispers of maids cleaning nearby.

“Honestly, what on earth is His Grace thinking? To shield a woman who might very well be the daughter of his sworn enemy like that… What if she suddenly ends up pregnant?”

“Maybe the Imperial Palace ordered him to do so? After all, wasn’t this marriage originally pushed forward by His Majesty the Emperor? Perhaps he’s being tempted into staying married.”

“…Trying to get pregnant?”

“Exactly. Even if it’s true that the Empress Dowager really did murder the late Empress, they couldn’t possibly cast out a woman carrying Delmarque blood, could they? That’s exactly what she’s counting on.”

Unaware someone had approached from behind, the maids jumped in fright at the sudden voice and spun around.

Herdin leaned casually against the wall, his cold eyes fixed on them—how long had he been listening?

Beneath his loosely tied robe, his firm physique was partially visible, crowned by a strikingly handsome face.

The very face they usually admired shyly, cheeks flushed, now looked utterly terrifying.

“I didn’t stock the library with mystery novels just so you could practice your deductions.”
