Early in the morning, Herdin woke up.
Although he had gone to sleep and risen at his usual times, he felt strangely unrested.
Perhaps he’d had a nightmare he couldn’t recall.
Shaking off the lingering unease, Herdin got out of bed and began his day as usual.
After smoking a cigar, he went to the bathroom, took a shower, changed clothes, and left his room. As he headed down the stairs toward the dining room, he noticed Blair’s door closed.
He hadn’t sought out Blair’s room himself, and for the past few days, he hadn’t seen her—not even at meals.
Though her defiance seemed childish, he decided to leave her be for now. Provoking her further might cause that frail woman to collapse again by the fireplace or fall ill, as she had last time, and that would be troublesome.
Passing Blair’s room and descending to the first floor, he happened upon Mason speaking seriously with a maid.
It was an otherwise ordinary morning scene, yet Mason’s expression was unusually grim—a rare sight indeed.
A bad feeling crept over Herdin.
He approached the two and asked,
“Mason, what’s going on?”
“Your Grace.”
The maid, seeing Herdin, quickly bowed her head and glanced nervously between Mason and Herdin.
After a brief hesitation, Mason spoke.

I’m not happy with hardin’s (again) indifferent attitude at knowing his wife’s missing. But, on the other side, he didn’t doubt her. He could have thought Blair was cooking something with the queen but he didn’t. In a way he does trust her.. but not enough for love to bloom healthily. Wish they communicated better
