After the nobles surrounding the two had dispersed, Herdin handed Katrina a glass of wine and began.

“Are you afraid of me, Your Majesty?”

Katrina, who had been sipping the wine he offered, burst into laughter as if she’d just heard an amusing tale.

“Afraid? Me? Of you?”

Looking at Katrina, he saw his wife’s face. Blair resembled her—only that famously exquisite beauty once hailed as peerless.

The moment he realized this, the woman before him became even more repulsive.

“You’re brainwashing me as though you’re terrified I’ll uncover the truth—that you’re merely the niece of a criminal, and I’m the one who forgave you and welcomed you into our family. That’s the truth, isn’t it?”

Her desperate attempts to suppress his spirit were rather comical. His mother-in-law still seemed to view him as a fifteen-year-old boy.

Herdin set his emptied glass down on the table and added,

“But when your intentions are too transparent, they often provoke the opposite reaction.”

Katrina’s smile had vanished as she gazed at Herdin.

“What you know is the truth. That fact will never change.”

Though Katrina’s voice brimmed with conviction, Herdin, as if no longer wishing to engage with her, bowed politely and turned away.

Retreating to a quiet corner of the banquet hall, Herdin wet his dry throat with wine and surveyed the room.

His eyes, now accustomed to Blair’s presence, quickly found her among the crowd.
