It seemed natural that Killian and Jediel showed interest in each other.

Veronia’s heart was in turmoil. Though she knew she shouldn’t, she missed Killian and wanted to see him.

‘Missing him? Impossible…! What are you thinking, Veronia!’

It was agonizing. The desire to be with him and the urge to push him away clashed violently within her.

Her heart felt shattered into pieces, with sharp edges stabbing each other. Holes formed where she was pierced, and bright red blood flowed out.

It hurt, it was painful, it was agonizing… Yet she found herself ridiculous for still being unable to let go of Killian.

‘Why am I like this?’

She thought the new life she gained after escaping the palace was perfect, without any shortcomings.

She received the gifts of Louisa and Hugo, and the blessing of Jediel. Her entire family was healthy in body and mind. She thought it was the ultimate happiness.

‘…But was it not?’

Truthfully, she wasn’t sure. Why she felt so empty now. She thought she had completed the puzzle and was happy, but suddenly feeling frustrated and upset as if just one piece was missing.

The one missing piece in her life, Killian. It felt like her life would be perfect with him. Only then would she truly be happy.

‘Don’t even… dare to dream such an impossible dream. Get a grip, Veronia.’

She put a stop to these ridiculous thoughts that kept snowballing. But her brain seemed unwilling to follow her orders. So Veronia had to spend the night tossing and turning, thinking of Killian.

It was the same during the day. Even while tending to patients at the clinic, Veronia often found herself spacing out.

“You seem low on energy today. Is something wrong?”

When her assistant Megan asked with a concerned voice, Veronia rubbed her face with both hands and replied.

“I tossed and turned last night, so I’m a bit tired.”

“Oh no…! Then shall we have lunch outside today for a change of mood? I heard the new restaurant across the street is quite delicious.”

“Sounds good! Let’s eat out after a long time. Thank you for your concern, Megan.”

“It’s nothing. Of course I should be concerned.”

When lunchtime came, the two took off their white coats and left the clinic.

The restaurant rumored to be delicious was indeed full. As they were debating whether to wait for a table or go somewhere else, a table suddenly became available.

“Oh! We’re in luck!”

“Indeed! How exciting!”

Veronia and Megan quickly sat down and waited for the waiter to clear the table. That’s when Veronia noticed a carelessly folded newspaper. The previous customers must have left it behind after reading.

Remembering she hadn’t read the newspaper yesterday and today due to her distracted mood, Veronia picked it up. As she opened the first page, there was an article about Killian.

“What article is it that makes you look so surprised?”

“Ah, well…”

The subject of the article was Princess Espin Montez, the youngest princess of the neighboring kingdom of Hisrik.

“Ah, an article about Princess Espin coming as a special diplomatic envoy for the upcoming coronation? I heard rumors about that too.”

“…Yes.”

Veronia couldn’t take her eyes off the newspaper article as she half-listened to Megan’s words.

“Even though she’s coming as a diplomatic envoy, they say she’s staying at the Drea mansion instead of the palace? Apparently because of her deep connection with the Duchess of Drea.”

“…”

“Do you think there might be talks of marriage between Princess Espin and the Drea family?”

Hohoho, Megan laughed as if enjoying the pleasant imagination. The end of the newspaper article contained content not much different from Megan’s prediction. It seemed the reporter, and indeed the entire empire, were hoping for a marriage between Killian and the neighboring country’s princess.

Veronia felt her breath catch. It was as if her internal organs had clumped together and hardened into a stone. With such a massive stone inside, her body felt too heavy to move or even breathe.

‘He’s someone who has nothing to do with me anyway. He always was, and always will be. Someone eternally unrelated to me!’

Veronia folded the newspaper she had finished reading and put it back in the corner of the table. She felt like tears would spill any moment, but she held them back by clenching her molars.

‘What exactly were you hoping for? Unable to reveal your identity, never able to have your true face for life, did you hope to be with him? Are you crazy?’

Veronia tried hard to comfort herself again and again. No, she blamed herself for momentarily dreaming of a future with Killian. She reproached herself for confessing in her heart that she loved him.

She thought herself detestable and blameworthy beyond words. She was filled with self-loathing.

‘But why… why does my chest hurt so much… Why am I sad?’

Megan sitting across from her was talking excitedly about various gossip, but Veronia could barely hear it, only a constant buzzing in her ears.

‘This is too… strange! Please get a grip, Veronia. Face reality. You knew from the start that you could never be with that person.’

The newspaper article’s contents about Killian coiled in her mind like a snake that refused to leave. It seemed to mock her, flaunting its sharp fangs and flicking its long tongue.

“Here are your lamb stew and roast chicken. Enjoy your meal.”

The food arrived, but Veronia had no appetite at all.

“Your Excellency, why do the approval documents on your desk only pile up and never decrease?”

Windler asked Killian as he placed yet more approval documents on the desk. But Killian didn’t seem to hear Windler’s question, only staring blankly at the accumulating documents with an unfocused gaze.

“Your Excellency? Your Excellency!”

“…Huh? What?”

Windler called Killian several more times in a raised voice. Finally, his gaze landed on Windler.

With a dazed expression as if he had just woken up, Killian looked at Windler, silently asking what he wanted.

“I request your prompt approval of these documents, Your Excellency.”

“…Right. Leave them there.”

Killian’s voice became sharp, seemingly displeased that his aide had disturbed his thoughts for such a trivial matter.

Despite being told to leave, Windler remained standing in place. Killian asked with furrowed brows.

“What is it? Do you have something more to say?”

“I… I’ve figured it out.”

When Windler answered with a seemingly serious expression, Killian asked again in an irritated voice, not understanding what he meant.

“Figured out what? Don’t beat around the bush, get to the point.”

“The reason why Your Excellency likes Ms. Nia.”

“What?”

What nonsense is this all of a sudden? Killian’s already furrowed brows deepened further, creating deep wrinkles.

“But if that’s really the reason you like Ms. Nia, I think it’s a very disrespectful action towards her.”

“…”

Killian couldn’t understand what Windler was talking about at all. So he rested his elbows on the desk, clasped his hands together, and stared at Windler. His gaze seemed to say, go ahead and keep talking.

Usually, Windler would have been intimidated by Killian’s aura, but today was slightly different. He seemed determined to confront Killian about his mistake.

“The reason Your Excellency likes Ms. Nia… isn’t it because she resembles the late Princess Veronia?”

“What?”

Killian asked back with a scowl, but in truth, he was quite surprised and flustered inside. Thoughts he couldn’t voice aloud filled Killian’s mind.

‘Why is Her Highness’s name mentioned here… Ah! He must have seen her without the hood yesterday.’

Killian continued his thoughts while still frowning. He was trying to maintain a poker face to hide his inner turmoil.

‘No. Even though her hair and eye color changed, completely altering her appearance… can he really recognize her? I didn’t know Windler’s eye for detail was this good.’

Windler absolutely must not discover Veronia’s true identity. If that happened, all their efforts so far would be in vain. He might never be able to see Veronia again.

‘That can’t happen! Absolutely not! I’ll have to be even more careful from now on.’

Killian looked at Windler while hiding his anxious feelings. His loyal aide let out a shallow sigh and continued in a calm tone.

“I saw yesterday. At first I was unsure, but as I kept looking at Ms. Nia’s face without the hood, I realized.”

“…”

“I could faintly see Princess Veronia’s face in Ms. Nia’s features. They’re not exactly alike, but the overall impression of their facial features is oddly similar.”

Having finished his introduction, Windler fell silent and stared at Killian. He seemed to be waiting for Killian’s reaction.

Realizing he couldn’t keep silent forever, Killian slowly opened his mouth.

“At first, I didn’t notice at all. But it’s true that as I encountered Nia more frequently, I saw similarities to Princess Veronia.”

“…”

I see, so it was true. Windler nodded slightly, a hint of confidence appearing in his eyes. He seemed pleased to learn his guess wasn’t wrong.

Killian continued his half-truth, half-lie excuse. Hoping desperately that Windler would believe him without suspicion.

“So I was surprised, but that’s not the reason I became interested in her. Absolutely not.”

“…”

“You’ve talked with Nia yourself, so you know well. She may resemble the Princess slightly in appearance, but her manner of speaking, personality, and way of thinking are all different.”

Windler nodded slowly, seeming to agree with Killian’s words.

“That’s true. But I’m worried Ms. Nia might be hurt if she learns this later. Wouldn’t it be better for Your Excellency to confess first?”

“…”

“What if Ms. Nia misunderstands? What woman would be happy to think the reason someone likes her is because of her resemblance to a former fiancée?”

Killian couldn’t help but be surprised at the current situation. To think he would end up receiving relationship advice from Windler!

There was nothing wrong with Windler’s words. They were all correct. Setting aside the fact that such a thing would never happen because Nia was Veronia herself, that is.
