The Day I Quit Being a Wife (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 17
Even the strongest person has at least one vulnerable spot.
For Hyuk Joo, it was his late mother.
Whenever he asked how she was doing, she always repeated only that she was fine. He had sensed during their phone calls that her voice wasn’t quite the same as before, but Hyuk Joo dismissed it as nothing serious.
His mother had always been prone to minor illnesses.
Since he was young, she had spent so much time lying in bed that he hadn’t noticed anything wrong with her weak voice—nothing to signal that something was seriously amiss.
But the mother he saw after a year apart was on her deathbed.
Her once-lustrous hair had turned dry and brittle, rustling faintly with every slight movement of her head.
Her pale skin had darkened, and her emaciated frame made him initially mistake the person lying in the bed for someone other than his mother.
“…Hyuk Joo.”
At the sound of his name, Hyuk Joo burst into tears. Even to his young eyes, it was evident that his mother’s remaining time was short.
He couldn’t even complain about why she hadn’t told him she was ill. Instinctively, he knew he had to spend every possible second feeling her warmth instead.
Just then, his phone vibrated briefly.
“Ah…”
Shaken from his memories, Hyuk Joo stood up.
It was a message from Eun Soo.
