Estelle’s pulse trembled against Johan’s palm.
A warm yet vivid sensation coursed through his body. Johan swallowed unconsciously.
‘It’s not even difficult.’
His fingers, placed against Estelle’s neck, refused to tense. They didn’t move at all. For a moment, Johan wondered if something was wrong with his hand.
‘I can’t kill her.’
Instead, he grew even more tense, afraid he might accidentally hurt this delicate woman’s neck. He tightened his grip.
His heart pounded.
He couldn’t even tell whether the heartbeat he felt was hers or his own. Johan stared down at the sleeping Estelle with eyes red enough to be chilling.
It was a ridiculous feeling.
Yet this absurd emotion and impulse had taken hold of him.
Johan was caught between reason, which wanted to deny it, and impulse, which longed to accept it. Like an unbreakable loop, no conclusion came.
“Ha.”
Johan let out an incredulous laugh.
“It was nothing at all.”
At first, Estelle had been nothing more than a target for his revenge against Libertan. But if that were truly all she was, he should have been able to kill her right then and there.
