“……Don’t you resent me?”

“Why would I?”

“If you hadn’t tried to save me that day, Pierne would’ve been safe.”

“Maybe so. Perhaps many things would’ve turned out differently if that letter hadn’t ended up in her hands. But in the end, that’s all in the past. It can’t be undone.”

“That’s exactly why I can’t forget it. Regardless of intent, it caused a terrible outcome.”

“It wasn’t your fault. Choosing to save you was my decision, and picking the wrong contact was your hyung’s choice alone.”

“The last thing Father told me was a warning: if I couldn’t save you, I shouldn’t come back at all.”

Duke Pierne slowly exhaled and pressed his fingers to his forehead. Uncharacteristically, his face was twisted in pain.

“He cared for you even more than he did for me. How could he possibly resent you?”

“I didn’t resent you because I thought your actions caused my family’s deaths. I resented you because I believed you’d changed.”

Though even that had been a misunderstanding.

My eyes widened at the firm touch against my cheek. Only then did I realize I’d been crying.

“Or maybe, it was jealousy.”
