“My lord is late.”

“He’ll be here soon.”

I read Bake’s letter right in front of them.

To be precise, it wasn’t actually written by Bake—it was a letter imitating his handwriting. The timely arrival of carrier pigeons bearing letters of greeting was merely a ruse to conceal that something had happened to him and to buy time.

But even that wouldn’t hold out much longer. A forged letter had its limits.

I folded the letter—likely my last—and slipped it back into the envelope, then turned my head.

Judging by the time, news I’d been waiting for should arrive soon. And just a few seconds after the cuckoo clock chimed the hour, commotion erupted outside.

“My lady, something terrible has happened!”

“What is it?”

“There’s been an accident.”

“An accident? What kind of accident?”

“Well, it’s just that….”

The servant who’d rushed in abruptly stopped speaking and glanced at me—more precisely, at my belly hidden beneath the blanket.

I quickly swallowed hard and steeled my eyes.

“I’m fine. Just tell me.”
