I raised my hand, mentally calculating our remaining food supplies. In any case, I needed time until my brother recovered. Even with Cheshire’s help, we hadn’t been able to leave the estate far behind because my brother simply lacked the strength.
“The captain would never allow it.”
“He’s your captain, not mine.”
I gave a light shrug, and the man finally let out a laugh—a positive response that needed no further explanation.

“Go back and tell your captain.”
