I bowed first in greeting, and the guest who had already arrived rose hesitantly from his seat and returned an awkward bow.

“Pleased to meet you, Marchioness Crayton. My name is Peter Fisher.”

Of course, it wasn’t out of goodwill. His narrow-set eyes, slightly narrowed, clearly revealed wariness directed toward me, and his shoulders were stiff with tension.

Seeing his obviously exhausted face, I offered a polite smile—but even that wasn’t enough to fully dispel the deep shadows beneath his eyes.

No matter how hard he tried to feign calm, it was futile. The veins bulging on his interlaced knuckles betrayed precisely how unbearable he found this situation.

To be honest, it wasn’t just that. The beads of sweat dotting his brow, his trembling body—everything about him screamed that he was utterly unaccustomed to this kind of scenario.

“You don’t need to be afraid. I don’t intend to eat you alive.”

It was meant to ease his tension, though I didn’t expect much from it.

After all, the way I’d relentlessly tracked him down—having hidden away in fear of retaliation for testifying—had been rough, and it had taken some time before this meeting could happen.

During that time, his mind must have spun with countless thoughts, including worst-case scenarios.

Though even his imagined worst wouldn’t compare to what he’d actually endured.

I looked at the man’s wrinkled, mottled skin. Though the burns covered a wide area, the wounds—left untreated for too long—had festered and rotted, and healing still wasn’t complete.
