It was an enticing proposition. If they could merely act as enemies while subtly manipulating situations as needed, nothing could be more perfect. Though unofficial in title, it was effectively the highest position anyone outside the Imperial Family could ever hope to attain.

But of all people, his counterpart was the Emperor—a sly fox. Bake couldn’t trust him. There was surely some hidden agenda behind it.

In the end, Bake shook his head roughly.

‘Of all people, the Emperor—that man is absolutely untrustworthy.’

As if proud of inheriting his mother’s devious blood, his actions weren’t merely cunning—they were extraordinary.

After all, wasn’t it precisely his cunning schemes that caused the throne to change hands right before everyone’s eyes?

‘If only His Majesty had ascended the throne, none of this would’ve happened.’

Though he’d lost the struggle for the throne, even a false emperor had his limits. Someday, the true ruler of the Empire would inevitably get another chance.

The problem was, waiting for that uncertain day was itself becoming increasingly impossible.

Bake pressed his fingers to his forehead, battling a throbbing headache.

He couldn’t trust the Emperor, yet he also couldn’t keep pouring meaningless water indefinitely.

Though it had been just a single defeat, the damage was immense. Having lost not only his support base but even his own kin as the price of failure, the man had grown excessively cautious.

While he played it safe, Calix tirelessly expanded his influence across the battlefield as if he had multiple lives, and the Emperor steadily solidified his power by drawing Calix closer.

Perhaps his own funeral would arrive sooner than the day the Empire’s ruler changed.
