“You have a timeframe for finishing your work, but the idea of me feeling emotions feels far too vague.”

“Could it just seem that way to your eyes?”

His steady gaze was dry—hope was nowhere to be seen.

“Maybe it is. Perhaps the day we go see dolphins will never come in our lifetime. But there’s no harm in holding onto hope, is there?”

Looking back now, my childhood wish to see dolphins wasn’t because I believed the tale that the dead become dolphins—it was because I needed something to lean on.
