Bake snarled fiercely, his hostility laid entirely bare. Even someone like Calix couldn’t possibly dispatch all the remaining henchmen quickly.

“Those calling themselves Felt’s children—all possess extraordinary strength beyond ordinary measure. Even the one whose growth has halted, stuck in a child’s body, is no exception.”

“You’re unusually talkative for yourself.”

“It was only possible because they forcibly and unnaturally enhanced their physical abilities.”

Calix’s gaze fell upon David. Though he appeared healthy to the naked eye, it was hard to be certain that hidden damage didn’t lurk beneath.

“The physician who examined the one we captured earlier said this: regardless of outward appearance, that woman’s body is already as decrepit as an old person’s. And she certainly looked that way to me too.”

“I never knew Duke Pierne enjoyed playing physician?”

That slick, smug face never brought good words. Bake ground his teeth and shot Calix a defiant glare. If there was one place he wanted to preserve his pride, it was in front of Calix.

Separate from his resolve, however, the hem of his trousers was steadily growing damp.

He could feel the ship sinking deeper by the moment. He had to escape as quickly as possible—every passing second saw the water rise higher, hastening the vessel’s inevitable submersion.

“Felt’s children don’t live long. It’s not due to congenital defects from bodily deformities, but because they artificially extracted their physical prowess, condemning themselves to a shortened lifespan.”

“So what?”

“They tried to make it seem like a formidable group still remained, but in truth, they’re just like their master—nothing but hollow illusions.”

Felt’s children, bound by misplaced loyalty, sought Felt’s potion despite knowing full well it cost them their very lives. From the start, their fearlessness toward death stemmed from their prior resolve to face it unflinchingly.
