“Is he trying to sway public opinion in his favor to slip away like this?”

“But the trial in the capital has already begun.”

“Already underway? Since when exactly?”

“Ever since the moment he arrived in the capital.”

My mouth fell open involuntarily. I knew the trial would be rushed, but I hadn’t expected it to move this quickly—and besides, Calix had never once mentioned it to me until now.

“You’re not even asking why I didn’t tell you.”

“There must have been a good reason. Perhaps you were worried I’d insist on attending the trial.”

I gave a faint smile. Calix had valid reasons for his silence. Despite daily visits from the physician, my body was far from normal.

Even traveling from nearby Pierne had left me unconscious for several days upon arrival. Unless I was prepared to utterly ruin my body, long-distance travel was simply out of the question.

“If necessary, I’ll go—but I don’t want to push myself more than I have to.”
