I instinctively reached out to comfort Meriel, but froze at the sudden increase in her wailing. I knew how to soothe a crying child—it had been second nature when the child still loved me. But this child, who didn’t remember me, only grew more frightened the more I tried.

“Are you crying again?”

I leaned out the window and saw a man looking up at us. Meriel’s cries must have carried outside, prompting him to double back.
