The young officer glanced quickly around before speaking again. Though he felt uneasy discussing this now, his anxiety only grew the closer they came to Felatan.

He hadn’t been completely unprepared for something like this when he’d volunteered for the Imperial Army, but actually wearing armor and holding a sword made his feelings strangely conflicted.

It had been fine up until the moment he’d steeled himself with the resolve to return home having earned great glory. Although they rode on horseback, the constant marching—without rest except for eating and sleeping—was exhausting, and the nightly patrols rotating through assigned sectors had grown tiresome. He kept wondering if it wouldn’t have been better to stay quietly in the capital after all.

Yet what unsettled him most was the fact that they were drawing ever closer to their destination. For a young man born and raised in the capital, war still sounded like a distant tale.

“The newly appeared Sir Crayton is also rather concerning. After all, the very person commanding troops in Felatan is already a Crayton.”

“So what do you expect us to do about it? We don’t have any power. We just follow orders from above.”

“That’s true, but it’s only natural to feel uneasy about it.”

“Stop saying nonsense that ruins everyone’s mood and just keep watch properly. Felatan is right before our eyes now.”

The older officer pressed down on his junior’s head with one hand while pointing toward the opposite direction with the other. Once they crossed the distant hill, they would enter Felatan’s territory.

From now on, they’d spend every day in enemy territory. His junior would understand what that truly meant by tomorrow—and wouldn’t dare chatter pointlessly anymore. After all, using Crayton as an excuse only worked because he still had the luxury of being nervous without showing fear.
