Ever since childhood, whenever Kevrant, who often visited the Green estate, saw Nels, he frowned as if he had seen something terrible.

It was during a time when Kevrant, deeply shocked by the fact that he was a beastman, feared exposure to outsiders.

Unaware of this, Nels couldn’t help but dislike Kevrant, who turned away without a greeting as soon as their eyes met.

She even wondered if she looked so ugly that she caused him to frown.

As she grew older, it improved, but whenever Kevrant greeted her warmly, she remembered her childhood and couldn’t help glaring at him with fiery eyes.

“I also think so, but our new sister is so kind… she said she married because she loved our brother so much. I guess she wanted to help him regain his spirits.”

“Really?”

“Her eyes are like clouded skies and her eyebrows are like paintings, and her chin…”

“No. Stop.”

Nels covered her ears with both hands.

“I don’t want to hear it.”

“Yeah, I didn’t want to talk about it to the end either. Anyhow, Lady Nelanixus Genal, Countess, take care. Don’t let the ladies and ladiesinwaiting speak ill. Make them so intimidated that they dare not look directly at our new sister.”

Nels, who controlled the social circle, knew what Zen wanted.

As Nels unfolded her glamorous fan, she said.

“Tell Lady Gereshian to be prepared to be amazed.”

In the reception room of the Earl of Green, Kevrant.

Kevrant stared at the young cleric sitting in front of him with indifference.

The clearly novice cleric, who had just gotten out of probation, stayed seated even as Kevrant entered the reception room.

He seemed to be unaware of how Kevrant was treated in the Holy Nation.

“His Holiness the Pope is very displeased with the rumors surrounding the Green family recently.”

The cleric stared at Kevrant and spoke.

“As you know, the Earl of Green, a family of Holy Artifact Guardians, must be upright in their conduct and reputation as much as they are under the protection of the Holy Nation. The reputation of the Green family affects the Holy Nation as well, which the Earl of Green should be well aware of.”

Looking at the greenhorn cleric who didn’t know the etiquette towards the Green family, it was clear the Pope didn’t take this matter very seriously.

Probably the clerics have been nagging and the Pope, out of annoyance, sent this inexperienced cleric.

“Despite the fact that the Pope is already full of worries without receiving his permission for the marriage, he can’t just watch as these bad rumors spread all over the continent.”

“I didn’t know I had to receive the Pope’s permission for a personal matter like a wedding.”

At Kevrant’s grumbled words, the cleric raised an eyebrow.

“What do you mean by that, an educated man! Who do you think it is thanks to, that the Green family can receive such treatment? Of course, it’s thanks to His Holiness the Pope’s favor. Have you forgotten that the Pope is like a father to the Green family?”

The Pope is favorable.

This cleric must have scored very low on the test during his probation period.

The Pope didn’t favor the Green family.

He needed the Green family.

The only lineage that is immune to any effects even when they touch the Holy Artifacts that could lead to death if mishandled.

The only family capable of storing dangerous Holy Artifacts was the Guardian of the Holy Artifacts, the Green family.

This cheeky cleric must think that the Green family became the Guardians of the Holy Artifacts due to the Pope’s favor.

“Of course, the Pope is like a father to me. But what now. Even my biological father didn’t know about my marriage. He didn’t know until just a few days ago.”

At the unexpected remark, the cleric’s eyes wavered.

“That, that’s… But that’s different. The Earl should show more respect to the Pope than to his biological father.”

“So? What does the Holy Nation want me to do?”

“The judgment is that the Countess of Green is not a legitimate lady. She got married without the Pope’s permission, and not long after the marriage, she is shaking the honor of the Holy Kingdom, including the Green family, with filthy rumors. Therefore, the Pope has commanded to divorce the Countess of Green and remarry a woman from the Holy Kingdom, handpicked by His Holiness.”

“Hmm.”

Kevrant’s eyes narrowed.

“Really? Did the Pope say that himself?”

“Yes!”

But Kevrant knew that couldn’t be the case.

It must have come from someone among the deputies.

Does this clergyman not know how dangerous it is to spread the Pope’s order as a lie?

Instead of pointing that out, Kevrant said, crossing his legs leisurely.

“What if the rumors circulating about my wife are not true?”

“I do not deny that you, as a count, want to trust the beautiful lady known as the flower of the Witlow Countess. However, Count, you must face the truth. Not only in thirdclass magazines but also in acknowledged newspapers, articles related to the Countess are being published.”

“Articles are not always true. The origin of that rumor was a thirdclass magazine. You must be aware that some newspapers publish articles without verifying the truth if they think they will sell well.”

The clergyman was frustrated because he could not get his point across.

Whether it is true or not, the reputation of the Holy Kingdom has been tarnished by the Countess of Green’s misdeeds.

Why doesn’t this count understand that?

“I was curious about the Count of Green, the Count of Green… He turned out to be nothing special. He’s completely infatuated with women. If his younger brother, the Duke of Eldheart, had inherited the countship, this wouldn’t have happened…”

“I do not think my wife is doing what is being talked about in the world. This is a matter of my household, and even if it is the Pope, he cannot interfere with my family affairs. Go back, clergyman. Then today’s event will be as if it never happened.”

“Ha!”

The clergyman was taken aback by Kevrant’s arrogant attitude.

Even in this situation, it would be insufficient to please the clergyman and send good news to the Pope, and yet he was still harping on today’s events.

“Look here, Count of Green. You seem to have some misunderstanding, this is the Pope’s will, and his command. You can’t simply reject…”

The clergyman couldn’t finish his sentence.

Because Kevrant slowly stood up.

Black energy was surging behind Kevrant.

That black energy seemed to have a tangible texture, it felt like it was coldly swallowing up the clergyman, grinding him to pieces.

“Marriage is not a matter of the Holy Kingdom or the Pope, but a vow to God, clergyman.”

Kevrant’s softly spoken voice strangely echoed in the clergyman’s eardrums as if it would burst.

“Break off the vow made to God by the Pope’s command? Is it truly the Pope’s command to break the promise with God without any reason?”

The cruelly shining grayblue eyes pressed down on the clergyman.

The clergyman couldn’t breathe, looking up at Kevrant.

It was frightening to meet Kevrant’s eyes.

But he couldn’t avoid it.

The moment he avoided it, those horrifying eyes would crush him.

He felt like he was going to die without knowing he was going to die.

“Tttthere’s no… there’s no reason…”

“How dare you, clergyman!”

“Ah!”

The clergyman felt like he was about to pee his pants.

Fortunately, at that moment, the black energy pressing down on the clergyman’s shoulder disappeared cleanly, and Kevrant sat back on the sofa as if nothing had happened.

It felt like the clergyman had had a nightmare.

There was no black energy behind Kevrant, and Kevrant’s eyes were as languid as before.

“Alright, clergyman. If the Pope’s will is really so, I will divorce.”

Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away

This is also on my reread list!

This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.

Definitely worth a read, y’all!

The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.

But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.

Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.

I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.

The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.

As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
