A few days before Mary’s welcome party, Kai arrived at the Papal Palace of the Holy Nation.

Kai was led not to the reception hall, but to the Pope’s private audience room.

“Have you been well, Your Holiness?”

“Not enough time has passed since I officiated your wedding for anything significant to have happened, you rascal.”

Pope Andrije Godelm rose personally to embrace Kai once before sitting back down on the sofa.

“Well then, did you achieve the effect you wanted through my officiation?”

“Your Holiness, do you truly think I did it for some calculated effect? I merely wished for the blessing of the Pope I respect so deeply.”

“You sly fox. If that’s what you wanted, why not just say so, instead of using a priest still wet behind the ears?”

“Keeping someone who doesn’t even know who you are and just flaps their mouth carelessly around isn’t wise, Your Holiness. And keeping someone who pokes around everywhere using such a fool as their pawn is even worse.”

Andrije immediately understood that Kai was referring to Grand Prelate Santiano Gifu.

Santiano was an ambitious man who coveted the papal throne.

In the Holy Nation, the next Pope was always chosen from among the Grand Prelates upon the death of the current one. Normally, the Pope designated his successor before dying, but to ascend to the papacy, one needed the support of the family entrusted with guarding the sacred relics.

Since Santiano was not on good terms with Kai, he was attempting to find some weakness of Kai’s and force him onto his side.

“Just give the word, Your Holiness, and I’ll deal with him.”

“Santiano is a gifted young man. He’s healed hundreds of the sick alone. He’s not fundamentally evil—just let him be for now. Ambition in the young is only natural.”
