“I don’t feel like smiling right now.”
“You’re wrong. That corner of your mouth is about to burst into laughter.”
Kai gently pressed Lisi’s lips with his index finger.
In the end, Lisi surrendered. She let out a soft giggle and gave him a bright smile.
“Good heavens. You laughed that hard? I had no idea you found me that cute, Lisi.”
“You must have hearing problems. I didn’t laugh that loudly.”
“As you know, wolves have excellent hearing.”
Lisi burst into cheerful laughter.
Her clear, ringing laugh was pleasant to hear.
Kai wondered what expression she’d make if he suddenly swept her up and tossed her into the lake.
Lisi tapped the corner of Kai’s eye with her index finger.
“You have that mischievous look in your eyes again, Kai.”
“Oh dear. Seems I can’t fool my wife. Next time I have a naughty thought, I’ll have to cover my eyes.”
“What naughty thought did you have?”
“I was thinking about tossing you into that lake.”
Lisi turned toward the lake.
After gazing at the water for a moment, she took off her shoes, lifted her dress hem, and marched straight toward the lake.
Kai stood dumbfounded, watching her back until she dipped her feet into the water, then finally called out, “Lisi!”
By then, Lisi was already waist-deep in water. She turned around with a radiant smile.
“I was curious too, Kai. What expression you’d make if I suddenly splashed into the lake. Come in, Kai. Don’t be afraid.”
“You really are impossible to handle.”
Kai took off his shoes and stepped into the lake.
“Were you trying to beat me?”
“Just thought I’d give it a try.”
“Don’t cry every time you fail.”
“I’m not a crybaby, Lisi.”
“According to Zen, you were.”
“Haa… Jereshien Green…”
Lisi giggled and waded deeper into the water.
“Be careful, Lisi. It gets deep suddenly.”
Kai hurried after her.
He suddenly felt he might spend his whole life trailing after Lisi like this—and he didn’t mind that feeling at all.
Lisi stopped where the water reached her waist and stared into the deep beyond.
“The water is so clear.”
“Like your eyes?”
“You really say the strangest things. Do you know what expression everyone in the dining room had when you spoke like that earlier?”
“I don’t care what they looked like, Lisi. Your expression is what matters.”
“What expression am I making right now?”
“One that says you’re utterly charmed.”
Lisi giggled.
“You really have a habit of interpreting my expressions however you please.”
“I don’t think so. If I were truly interpreting however I pleased, I’d interpret it differently.”
“How?”
“As an expression that says you want to kiss me.”
Without waiting for Lisi’s reply, Kai captured her lips. He couldn’t stand it any longer—her plump, moist lips had been nagging at his nerves since earlier.
Even with the sudden kiss, he loved how naturally her lips parted to welcome him.
Their lip temperatures merged, and their body heat intertwined. Even pulling her tightly against him by the waist didn’t feel close enough.
Closer. Deeper.
Kissing her only made him thirstier.
He couldn’t even imagine how he’d managed to live before kissing Lisi.
He briefly pulled back and pressed his forehead to hers.
Their ragged breaths tangled together.
“Lisi, you’re driving me crazy.”
“You can’t go crazy, Kai. There’s this thing called rabies…”
“Aha-ha!”
Caught completely off guard by her retort, Kai burst out laughing.
“You’re treating me like a dog? Is this how you are, Lisi?”
Kai stepped back slightly and splashed water toward her.
The clear droplets trickled down her neck.
“Oh dear. Splashing water on your caring wife? That won’t do, Kai.”
Lisi scooped up a handful of water with both hands and flung it at Kai, but he was too quick.
When she failed to hit him, she puffed out her cheeks, scooped more water, and splashed again.
Kai nimbly dodged once more and, with one hand, scooped water and tossed it back at her.
Splash—
Oops.
That wasn’t supposed to be so much.
The water that landed on top of Lisi’s head soaked her face, neck, and the front of her chest completely.
“I’m sorry, Lisi. I didn’t mean to drench you like that…”
As Kai stepped forward to apologize, Lisi launched a sudden attack.
Of course, Kai could have dodged—but this time, he pretended he couldn’t and let her water hit him.
Lisi wore a smug expression after her successful strike.
Kai found her so unbearably cute he wanted to bite her right then and there.
No, he *had* to bite her.
He couldn’t take it anymore.
Just as he was deciding exactly where to bite for maximum effect…
“I hate to interrupt your fun water play, but…”
Jamie’s voice came from the lakeside.
Lisi and Kai both turned simultaneously.
Jamie sat atop his horse,
his eyes clearly saying,
‘What on earth are those two up to?’
“We have a visitor.”
“Who?”
Kai asked as he took Lisi’s hand and splashed out of the lake.
Jamie, apparently afraid Kai might splash him too, backed his horse away slightly before replying.
“Not for the master—for Lady Iris.”

As soon as they entered the room, Krishina hurried over, startled.
“Oh my! Why are you both soaked? What if you catch a cold?”
Erwell asked with a serious expression.
“Was it an enemy attack?”
“No, we were just playing by the lake a bit…”
“Did the enemy attack just a little?”
“Er, stop talking nonsense and go get some towels.”
“Nonsense? Britney, that wretched girl…”
Whack!
This time, Lisi clearly witnessed it.
Krishina’s elbow mercilessly jabbed Erwell’s slender stomach.

Lisi hesitated briefly before nodding.
“Alright.”
Jamie opened the drawing room door.
The man sitting on the sofa sprang to his feet.
It was Gauzer, whom they’d entrusted with managing Lavent’s gold mine.

Even after exchanging greetings, Gauzer didn’t immediately get to the point.
He sat silently with a grim expression for a long while.
Knowing why he’d come, Lisi waited quietly for him to speak.
After sighing several times, Gauzer finally opened his mouth.
“I’m sorry for delaying, Lady Iris. It’s just… the news isn’t good…”
“It’s alright. Just tell me.”
“The gold mine… is blocked.”
“The gold mine is blocked.”
“It’s a dead mine. No matter which way we go, solid rock blocks the path. We can’t go any deeper.”
“I see.”

“Lady Iris, explosives… can’t be used there. It’s far too deep. To detonate explosives, someone must stay within a certain distance—but if we detonate them there, it might collapse not just the rock but the entire mine.”
Gauzer explained patiently, assuming Lisi simply didn’t understand the situation.
“It won’t collapse.”

“No one will die.”

“I understand. But it won’t collapse. On the rock blocking the north—place one explosive at the lower right, another at the upper left. Detonate them. The rock will break, and no one will be hurt.”
Gauzer looked toward Kai as if pleading for him to intervene.
Kai, who’d been watching Lisi with puzzled curiosity at her firm tone, noticed Gauzer’s glance and simply shrugged—as if to say, ‘I can’t stop her either.’
“Lady Iris, it’ll be too late once there are casualties.”
“There won’t be any casualties. But if there are, I’ll take responsibility.”
“No, I’ll take responsibility. I’m the overseer there. It’s just… no matter how common I am, I believe human life is more precious than gold.”
At Gauzer’s earnest words, Lisi smiled gently.
This was exactly why she liked him.
“I feel the same way, Gauzer. Do you think I don’t value human life?”
A brief silence passed.
After holding Lisi’s gaze for a while, determination filled Gauzer’s eyes.
“I decided to follow Lady Iris. I’ll follow through.”
“Do that, Gauzer. You won’t regret it.”
