The Beast Swallowed by the Flower (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 3
“Kaelbrant Green? Is it really that Count Green? The Guardian of the Relic?”
Britney’s eyes lit up.
The moment she heard the name Kaelbrant Green, the words she’d just heard from Lisi about “your father” vanished completely from her mind.
“Yes, that’s right. He arrived just a while ago and is now in the reception room with His Grace.”
“What’s he here for?”
“I overheard a bit—he was saying something about His Grace’s daughter and then went into the reception room. His voice was low, so I couldn’t hear clearly, but…”
“His Grace’s daughter? Me? He must be talking about me, right?”
“Of course. Who else could it be?”
Britney’s face flushed pink.
Kai was currently the most popular man in high society.
As the Guardian of the Relic, his house enjoyed the direct blessing of the Holy Nation—so much so that even the Emperor dared not treat him carelessly. Though holding only the title of count, he wielded power equal to that of a duke.
But the family’s prestige was secondary. What truly mattered was Kai’s appearance.
He was, quite literally, beautiful. With broad shoulders, a narrow waist, great height, and long legs, he was often praised as a statue carved by the gods themselves at their very best.
His tousled black hair and deep-set steel-gray eyes beneath thick eyebrows were so striking they stole one’s breath away with just a glance.
Beneath his perfectly shaped nose lay red lips that were moist and inviting—so many women fantasized about those lips tracing their skin.
Noble ladies longed to become his wife, and noblewomen drooled at the thought of taking him as their lover.
Yet despite his decadent beauty, Kai—Count of the Holy Nation—was known for his impeccable conduct; not once had he been linked to scandal or rumors with any woman.
“To be honest, last time at the ball, Count Green asked me to dance, and we danced together.”
It was true they’d danced, but Kai hadn’t been the one to ask.
Britney had cautiously approached and requested the dance herself, and Kai had merely accepted, as it would have been impolite to refuse a lady.
But in Britney’s memory, the event had been romanticized into Kai desperately pleading with her for a dance.
“We talked quite a bit while dancing then…”
“That must be it, miss. He must have fallen for you right then.”
The maid quickly said what Britney most wanted to hear.
“So that’s really it, huh?”
“Of course. How could any man resist you? You’re so beautiful, and your dancing is superb too.”
“What if he asks me to marry him?”
“How would you feel about that, miss? Do you like Count Green?”
“I’m not sure.”
In truth, she was head over heels.
“It’s just that we only spoke once then… But since he came all this way, I should meet him nicely and talk some more.”
“This isn’t the time to stand around. Hurry and change into a proper dress.”
“Oh, right! Right! That’s what I should do.”
Britney left the room with her maid and the servant girls who’d been attending both her and Lisi, as if she’d completely forgotten Lisi’s very existence.
Lisi picked up the discarded corset, stared at it silently for a moment, then tossed it aside with a flick.
She didn’t spare a glance for the dress she’d been meant to wear for Alford; instead, she picked up the clothes she’d draped over a chair earlier.
It was a worn-out dress—only slightly better than what the maids wore.
After putting on the dress, Lisi stood before the mirror.
Her hair, styled and pinned elaborately to match the formal gown, clashed with the plain dress.
Lisi began removing the hairpins, one by one.
Her silver hair, tinged with pink, slid softly down her neck in gentle waves.
She roughly combed through her tousled hair with her fingers and smiled faintly.
She’d never looked more splendid.

Duke Gloven Wittelo gazed at Kai with an awkward expression.
“You mean that girl?”
“What do you mean, ‘that girl’? When you spoke of your eldest daughter, Lady Britney, you called her ‘our daughter,’ yet now it seems Lady Iris, your youngest, is not your daughter at all.”
Gloven swallowed hard at Kai’s slow, knowing words—as if he were intimately familiar with the Wittelo family’s affairs.
When Kai had first declared, “I’ve come to forge a bond with House Wittelo,” Gloven had assumed he meant a military or economic alliance.
And when Kai casually added, “I’ve heard your daughter is truly beautiful,” Gloven had naturally assumed he meant Britney.
Trending
After all, Britney had recently returned from the ball boasting endlessly—until it was practically drilled into his ears—that Count Green had asked her to dance.
Though bearing the title of a ducal house, the Wittelos were in decline, making Kaelbrant Green of the Relic-guarding Green family an extremely desirable match.
But Gloven had long since given up any hope, having heard that Kai cared for nothing but the Relic and showed no interest in marriage.
So when Kai himself appeared and began speaking of “your daughter,” Gloven saw it as a golden opportunity.
Until Kai said, “I wish to spend my life with Lady Iris.”
Gloven had never dreamed Kai would come for Iris.
Iris was the daughter they’d kept hidden under the pretense of being “too delicate for public display”—she’d never even been sent to a ball.
They’d only occasionally shown her to suitors who could fund the Wittelo household, and through their whispers, Iris became known as “the Flower of House Wittelo.”
Because she’d never officially debuted in society despite everyone’s curiosity, many men were eager to catch even a glimpse of her.
Thus, Iris’s value had steadily risen—and just recently, Alford had mentioned the mine in Ravent, with a contract set to be signed today.
But Alford had failed to appear, and suddenly Kai had come instead, demanding Iris.
It was an undeniably difficult situation.
“Well… uh… it’s just that the eldest hasn’t married yet…”
At Gloven’s feeble excuse, Kai’s lips curled into a faint smile.
Gloven swallowed nervously at that cold smile.
“Who observes such customs these days? Even the Rodven Count family and the Prunta Marquis family married off their second or youngest daughters first. Even the third and fifth princes of the Gaviazar Empire married before the Crown Prince.”
Kai spoke slowly.
“Could it be that Your Grace considers this Kaelbrant Green unworthy to become your son-in-law?”
“N-no! Of course not! That’s not it at all, Count Green. It’s just… our Iris is very shy and delicate… and doesn’t seem ready for marriage yet. As you know, she’s even afraid to appear in society.”
“Oh, really?”
Kai lifted the corner of his lips slightly.
For the first time, Gloven realized how frightening a smile could be when it held no warmth in the eyes.
“Hearing that only makes me desire her more.”
Disaster.
Gloven quickly scrambled for another excuse.
“As you know, arranged marriages are quite out of fashion these days. Our Iris has repeatedly said she wishes to marry for love…”
“There’s a gold mine in Benot.”
Kai cut off Gloven’s sentence.
At the mention of Benot’s gold mine, Gloven’s ears perked up.
The Benot gold mine, owned by House Green, was one of the top five mines in the land—rich in gold and yielding dozens of large diamonds.
It utterly dwarfed the Ravent mine Alford had promised to give him.
“I intended to offer the Benot gold mine as her dowry…”
Gulp.
Gloven swallowed hard.
“Since Lady Iris wishes to marry for love, I suppose it’s a shame.”
Kai stood up as if he had nothing further to discuss.
“W-wait, Count! Just a moment!”
Now it was Gloven who desperately wanted something.
He had raised Iris precisely for moments like this.
The Benot gold mine—and the prestige of House Green to boot.
Just as his wife had said, it had been wise not to kill Iris but to raise her.
“Is there anything else we need to discuss?”
Kai, having seemingly given up on Iris, was now coldly detached.
Gloven feared Kai would leave right then and there.
“P-please, do sit back down, Count. It’s been so long since we last saw each other, after all!”
“Hmm.”
“Moreover… now that I think about it, Iris once said that while romance frightens her, marrying a man I chose for her wouldn’t be so bad. So… please, sit down, won’t you?”
Gloven gestured toward the sofa.
Kai slowly sat and crossed his legs.
Though Kai was clearly young and his posture slightly disrespectful, Gloven felt no anger—his mind was entirely consumed by thoughts of the Benot gold mine.

“So… you really mean to give the Benot gold mine as dowry?”
“Here.”
Kai pulled a document from his coat.
“I’ve already prepared the papers. All you need to do is sign.”
“I… see.”
Gloven’s eyes gleamed with greed as he stared at the document.
“In that case… well… I suppose Count Green would surely cherish our Iris greatly…”
Knock.
The knock interrupted Gloven’s words.
Frustrated at this intrusion just before the crucial moment, Gloven snapped.
“What is it!”
“It’s me, Father.”
Hearing Britney’s voice, Gloven had a sudden change of heart.
After all, it felt wasteful to hand the position of Countess Green to someone like Iris.
If even the stoic Kai had asked Britney to dance, perhaps showing Britney to him again might change his mind.
“Come in.”
He answered without even glancing at Kai.
The door opened, and Britney entered, more radiant than ever.
She’d gathered her dazzling golden hair loosely, letting a few strands fall gracefully, and wore a pink dress that revealed her shoulders—not provocatively, but elegantly.
A delicate pendant necklace accentuated her slender neck.
She looked like a porcelain doll.
Britney gave a gentle curtsy toward Kai, lightly holding her skirts.
“It’s been a while, Count Green.”
“I see.”
“It’s our first meeting since the last ball.”
“I see.”
Gloven stole a quick look at Kai’s expression.
But Kai’s impassive face revealed nothing.
“Go on, sit down, Brin.”
“Yes, Father.”
Britney settled softly beside Gloven.
Kai’s gaze remained as cold as ever.
“Now that I think of it… I heard you asked our Britney to dance at the last ball, Count Green. People said you made a truly beautiful pair.”
“Oh?”
Kai narrowed his eyes slightly.
“Is that so? Who told you that?”
“Uh… well…”
Of course, it had been Britney herself.
“But you danced with me then, didn’t you, Count? Don’t you remember?”
Britney asked brightly.
Kai replied flatly as he looked at her.
“Lady Britney, you must be rather dim-witted.”
“Excuse me?”
“It wasn’t I who asked for the dance—it was you, pleading desperately for just one dance. Didn’t you even add ‘please’ at the end?”
Britney’s face turned bright red.
Given her temperament, she’d normally have snapped back furiously—but since her opponent was the Count of House Green, she couldn’t dare.
She gripped her skirts tightly and panted in humiliation.
She wished her father would step in—but Gloven merely fidgeted anxiously, watching Kai’s every move.
Knock.
Another knock broke through the heavy, awkward silence.

Before anyone could answer, the door opened.
Standing behind it was Lisi.
“Iris! What do you think you’re doing here—”
Finally, someone to vent his anger on.
He’d pretend to escort Lisi out just to leave this room and take it out on her.
With that thought, Britney jumped up—but Kai rose even faster, striding straight toward Iris.
Lisi, wearing a shabby dress utterly unfit for this setting, stood calmly with her hands neatly clasped before her, watching as Kai walked directly to her.
As if it were only right.
Stopping before Lisi, Kai placed a hand over his chest and bowed deeply, respectfully.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Lady Iris. And I earnestly beg you—please, marry me.”
