While Krishina fixed Erwell’s posture with a terrifying glare, Kai strode cheerfully toward Lisi.
“I finally have some free time. Have you finished touring the mansion?”
“I haven’t seen all of it yet.”
“Perfect.”
Kai extended his hand toward Lisi.
Not understanding what he wanted, Lisi stared blankly at his large palm.
His fingers were long, his knuckles thick, and calluses dotted his palm from gripping a sword often. Lisi, having never seen the hands of someone so skilled in combat, was momentarily mesmerized.
“Lisi?”
Snapped out of her daze by his voice, she looked up blankly.
“What are you doing? Give me your hand.”
She unconsciously placed her hand onto his open palm.
He grinned.
“You hand it over just because I ask? You’re like a well-trained puppy, Lisi.”
“And you’re an ill-mannered wolf.”
At their exchanged murmurs, the quick-witted Krishina gestured for the other maids to leave. But Gillette stood rooted to the spot, eyes wide as she stared at Lisi and Kai.
Eventually, Krishina grabbed Gillette’s dress hem and pulled her. Gillette irritably swatted Krishina’s hand away and stormed out on her own.
Once the maids had left, Kai pulled Lisi up from the sofa by her hand.
“There seems to be a maid among them who’s showing her teeth.”
“That’s because you raised her without manners.”
“What harsh words! I hate raising anything, Lisi—I can’t even keep a houseplant alive.”
“According to Gillette, she used to attend to you personally.”
“Attend to me? Oh…!”
Kai narrowed his eyes.

“Then why did you let Gillette act so outrageously?”

“Because they own the trade guild?”
“Yes.”
“Then discard them. They’re useless now.”
“Alright.”
Kai agreed readily, without even asking how she knew.
Lisi gazed intently at him before finally speaking.
“You’re becoming terse, Kai.”
Kai burst into laughter.
“Oh, sorry, sorry—I just remembered how you used to speak casually to me sometimes. Even now, it’s chillingly charming, Lisi.”
“Is that a compliment?”
“Of course.”
Kai took Lisi’s hand and led her into the hallway.
“Where are we going?”
“Since I have time, I’ll give you a proper tour of the mansion. I heard you’ve been learning all sorts of things about the Green family—but nothing’s as accurate as seeing it with your own eyes.”

As soon as the building came into view, Kai spoke.
“From here on, you must follow exactly where I step.”
“Are there traps?”

Kai glanced back several times, worried she might make a mistake.

Kai turned away from Lisi and walked to the building’s door, lifting a front paw. He extended the sharp claws on his massive paw and inserted them into four slots on the door.
Clang—
The door opened.
“This door can only be opened with my claws.”
While Kai returned to his human form and dressed himself, Lisi deduced what lay inside this black building.
