Taming the Wicked Professor (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 13
Inserting a central venous catheter into the subclavian vein usually requires at least two years of residency to master, so Na Young still felt a bit nervous every time she performed a CVC procedure.
First, she anesthetized the area with lidocaine and took a deep breath before inserting the catheter into the subclavian vein.
She absolutely couldn’t afford to miss placing the catheter.
Puncturing the wrong internal organ would be disastrous.
Just rehearsing all those precautions in her mind inevitably made her tense.
Any mistake could be fatal for the patient, after all.
If she got this nervous merely inserting a catheter, she still couldn’t fathom how she’d handle the pressure when she eventually performed surgery herself.
Taking her time, she carefully inserted the catheter, then finished by applying a bandage after administering heparin to prevent clotting.
“Good job.”
After thanking the nurse who’d assisted her, Na Young stepped out of the ICU and stopped short upon spotting Professor Choi Tae Hyuk walking toward her.
He was holding the bouquet of white roses she’d given him, making him even more noticeable.
Professor Choi Tae Hyuk didn’t stop in front of her but suddenly asked as he approached,
“Who was that guy who gave you a gift in front of the main gate last night?”
Na Young’s expression turned incredulous.
She wondered why he’d bring that up right now.
She could’ve ignored him as rudely as he’d just done, but she disliked the idea of her younger brother being misunderstood as someone inappropriate, so she answered honestly.
“He’s my younger brother.”
Hearing her reply, Professor Choi Tae Hyuk lifted his chin, muttered something under his breath, then looked back at her and extended the hand holding the bouquet.
Was he seriously going to give the gift back to her now?
Staring at Professor Choi Tae Hyuk as if challenging how far he could possibly push his bad luck, Na Young said coldly,
“If you don’t like the flowers, just throw them away.”
She tried to walk past him, but Professor Choi Tae Hyuk stepped in front of her again.
Na Young looked up at him with annoyance in her eyes.
Just as she was getting angry herself, Professor Choi Tae Hyuk spoke.
“I just received this bouquet from Nam Ho Jin.”
What?
Na Young’s expression turned utterly flabbergasted.
“Did Senior Nam give you a bouquet too?”
Now he was copying everything, it seemed.
“No, that’s not it!”
Despite the misunderstanding, Tae Hyuk’s voice rose in frustration—then he paused and calmed himself down.
He couldn’t afford to get agitated; that would ruin even things that could go well.
Composing his voice, Tae Hyuk explained again,
“Nam Ho Jin intercepted the bouquet you gave me before I ever saw it.”
Na Young just stared at him, completely baffled.
Truthfully, even he wouldn’t have guessed this at all if Yoon I Na hadn’t mentioned the bouquet to test his reaction.
“So I’m seeing this bouquet for the first time right now.”
“…….”
The more Na Young chewed over his words, the wider her eyes grew.
“What?”
She’d assumed he’d seen the bouquet yesterday yet acted like this today anyway, and had been cursing him internally as a jerk.
“…….”
“…….”
A long silence stretched between the two now that the misunderstanding had cleared.
Na Young felt deeply embarrassed realizing she’d misjudged him.
Meanwhile, Tae Hyuk felt a sudden urge to confess everything honestly to her—
that he remembered their one night together perfectly,
and that one night wasn’t enough for him to end things with her.
“I actually…”
“I was…”
Both broke the silence simultaneously.
Na Young stopped and gestured for him to speak first.
“You go ahead, Professor.”
“No, you first, Dr. Moon.”
His polite insistence was so unlike the usual Professor Choi Tae Hyuk that Na Young nearly laughed.
Without further hesitation, she spoke first.
“I was scared we’d stay awkward forever. As a first-year resident, I need lots of guidance from professors, and if my supervising professor has it out for me, I’d be seriously at a disadvantage.”
Hearing her words felt like someone had pressed a hand firmly over the confession rising up his throat—
because what he’d wanted to say was the complete opposite:
that he didn’t want her to see him merely as her supervising professor anymore.
“So, Dr. Moon, do you often give flowers to professors?”
Caught off guard by his sudden question, Na Young flinched.
If she said it was her first time, it might sound like she considered him especially important.
“Yes, I do it often.”
She even nodded to emphasize the lie.
Tae Hyuk felt disappointed by her answer.
He looked down at the white rose bouquet in his hand.
Now that he noticed—it wasn’t red roses, but white ones.
Realizing that distinction only now, Tae Hyuk gave a bitter smile.
So, her giving him flowers didn’t mean he held any special place in her heart after all.
“What were you going to say, Professor?”
Meeting her clear, innocent gaze, Tae Hyuk searched her face for any trace of that night.
But though her face looked the same, her eyes now held a completely different expression.
The more obsessed he became with that night, the greater his disappointment grew.
“I forgive you for taking my photo.”
Hearing his words, Na Young smiled brightly—
the happiest expression he’d seen from her since she’d come to the hospital.
“Thank you.”
She now felt at ease—but he was the opposite.
Because of the bouquet she’d given him, he could no longer suppress the feelings he’d kept tightly locked away.
He realized he wouldn’t be satisfied until he truly had her.
If he kept restraining himself like this, he’d really end up getting sick.
As a doctor who healed others, living like this wasn’t right—Tae Hyuk justified it to himself however he liked.
“See you tomorrow.”
Despite such dangerous thoughts, his farewell sounded perfectly casual.
“Yes, see you tomorrow, Professor.”
With no idea what he was really thinking, Na Young replied politely and felt relieved.
She assumed they’d go back to being just professor and resident without any issues from tomorrow onward.
***
Beep beep.
Na Young opened her eyes not to her alarm clock, but to a message notification.
She fumbled for her phone, checked the message, and frowned.
“What on earth?”
The sender was Professor Choi Tae Hyuk, messaging her this early in the morning:
So he wanted to put her to work this early?
Didn’t we just make up yesterday?
Apparently, all that reconciliation talk was just empty words.
Na Young almost let out a complaint but suppressed it and got out of bed.
Visiting Professor Choi Tae Hyuk’s office was now added to her morning schedule, so she had to move faster than usual.
Starting ward rounds at 5 a.m., she meticulously but swiftly dressed surgical patients’ wounds, double-checked every patient’s condition before morning rounds, then sprinted to Professor Choi Tae Hyuk’s office.
“Huff… huff…”
As she caught her breath outside his office, Professor Choi Tae Hyuk’s voice came from behind her.
“You’re right on time.”
“Yes, good mor—”
Turning to greet him, Na Young’s words trailed off as she saw him.
He always dressed well, but today he seemed especially put-together—
just like when they’d met at the club.
His sharp, magazine-model-like appearance left Na Young staring blankly.
She shouldn’t be shaken so easily, yet for a moment, she let her guard down.
Professor Choi Tae Hyuk brushed past her and opened the office door.
“Come in.”
“!”
Na Young blinked rapidly, noticing something else unusual about him.
The subtle, refined scent wafting from him was definitely cologne.
Good grief—he’d even worn cologne.
What’s going on? Is he going on a blind date or something?
Unconsciously, she found herself glaring at the back of his head.
When he turned around, she instantly put on a perfectly polite expression and asked,
“What did you need me to do? I have to leave right away.”
She had to do morning rounds with the chief before the official rounds started.
Professor Choi Tae Hyuk handed her a bento box he’d brought.
“Take this and eat it.”
Expecting to be given a task, she was startled when he offered her breakfast instead.
“Why are you giving this to me?”
And why call her over just for this?
“It’s in return for the bouquet. Take it.”
That made her even more flustered.
She’d given him the bouquet to apologize for her mistake, not expecting anything in return.
“No, really, it’s fine. Your forgiveness is more than enough for me.”
When she even waved her hands to refuse, Professor Choi Tae Hyuk’s eyes instantly hardened, his tone shifting back to his usual self.
“So you want me to throw it away?”
“Throw it away? No! You should eat it yourself.”
“Then I guess I’ll have to throw it away.”
As he genuinely walked toward the trash can with the bento, Na Young panicked and quickly grabbed it.
“I’ll just eat it myself.”
Only then did Professor Choi Tae Hyuk look satisfied.
Na Young couldn’t decide whether this counted as kindness or torment.
***
Na Young stayed busy all morning and only got to eat the bento from Professor Choi Tae Hyuk at lunchtime.
When she opened the lid, her eyes widened.
It was a thoughtfully homemade-looking bento, full of care.
She’d planned to just quickly scarf something down due to her tight schedule, but this unexpectedly wonderful meal lifted her mood.
And it even tasted delicious.
It seemed Professor Choi Tae Hyuk had been sincere about it being a “return gift.”
When she ran into him after his outpatient clinic ended, Na Young remembered to thank him.
“The bento was really delicious, Professor.”
Professor Choi Tae Hyuk gave a look that said “of course it was,” then reached into his pocket, pulled something out, and handed it to her.
Na Young stared silently at what he held out.
“…….”
“What? Don’t you like chocolate?”
It wasn’t that—she just wondered why he kept giving her food every time they met today.
It wasn’t expensive or significant enough to warrant asking this time, so Na Young reached out and accepted the chocolate.
“I’ll enjoy it.”
After parting ways with Professor Choi Tae Hyuk, Na Young got on the elevator heading down to the ER—and happened to meet Professor Oh Seung Joon, who was also on his way there.
She offered him one of the chocolates she’d just received.
“Professor, would you like some chocolate?”
“Oh! Thanks! My sugar levels were just crashing.”
“I got these from Professor Choi, actually.”
Seung Joon, who’d been about to unwrap the chocolate, immediately rewrapped it and handed it back to her.
Confused, she stared at him.
“What’s wrong?”
“You said Choi Tae Hyuk gave this to you?”
“So what?”
“In my entire life, the only being I’ve ever seen Choi Tae Hyuk give food to was his dog.”
Wait—what? Was he seriously comparing her to a dog?
Seung Joon clicked his tongue and warned her,
“It’s territorial marking. Watch out.”
