Jacak looked at him seriously and said, “You must be well aware of the story that the Kelphi tribe has served only one master from ancient times. I have chosen her as the queen I will serve, and I will be her companion.”
Jacak clarified that he wouldn’t make her his companion but instead offered to be hers.
Chief Horak’s eyes widened, and he burst into laughter. Sosa observed him, wondering, ‘What’s going on?’
Although the chief stopped laughing, he continued with a full smile on his face.
“So, you’ve fallen in love too. Well, it’s about time for you to get married. Time flies…”
Jacak blushed with embarrassment.
Chief Horak, the oldest adult in the village who had witnessed Jakac’s growth since he was a baby, looked at Jakac with teasing eyes and said, “If you had mentioned another reason, I might have been suspicious. But saying it’s because of love makes you look honest and trustworthy.”
The Kelphi tribe was known for being very cautious when accepting companions, and once someone became their companion, the tribe was committed to giving their best for a lifetime.
To conceal his embarrassment, Jakac deliberately asked coldly, “What are you trying to say?”
“Although our ultimate goals are different, it seems we are walking the same path. Your goal, the survival of a minority, and your love for the butterfly. To achieve that, it’s expected that the current Emperor must wither, as you probably anticipate.”
Sosa was surprised. He was openly revealing his dark intention to assassinate the Emperor.
Although Jakac showed no emotions externally, internally, his heart was pounding.
The chief, with his index finger raised, asked again, “So, let me ask you once more. Before you left the village, I probably asked you the same question.”
Jakac guessed what he was about to say, and his gaze became more composed.
The chief looked straight into his eyes and asked, “Are you willing to become a guardian for this village, prepared to sacrifice yourself?”
Jakac, with meaningful eyes, asked, “I’ll also ask one thing. Are you instructing me to assassinate the Emperor?”
The chief raised one corner of his mouth. “Yes.”
Sosa looked at Jakac in surprise. The betrayal by a man named Sairun… It seemed to be the chief’s order after all.
Originally, he was supposed to assassinate Karaf. That was his mission.
Now, it turned out that approaching Karaf as a friend was also part of an intentional plan.
But as he became friends, did he unknowingly develop affection and dull his emotions?
In the end, he couldn’t bring himself to kill Karaf. Instead, he placed an inexplicable curse on his heart and left.
When Syilan’s story was brought up, the chief’s expression was not favorable, probably because an unexpected event had occurred.
Jakal’s face darkened.
After Syilan cursed and died, Karaf’s anger escalated to the extreme, leading to a nationwide wanted order for the minority. In the process, numerous minorities were captured, and the Kelphi tribe, including his parents, ended up being annihilated while resisting to protect the villagers.
Syilan’s betrayal was the culprit behind all these events.
However, Jakal’s goal was not to assassinate Karaf. Instead, contrary to the chief’s purpose, his goal was to reform Karaf and stabilize the empire.
However, hearing only the words ‘love for the butterfly,’ the chief hastily concluded that Jakal wanted to recover the butterfly from the Emperor by any means necessary.
His return to the village only strengthened this belief.
It was fortunate, perhaps, that the chief was misled.
Jakal looked straight at him and said, “It seems you’re still skillful at reaping benefits from others. Before I answer, there’s one more thing I’d like to ask. If I don’t accept your proposal, what were you planning to do with us?”
“What are you talking about?”
Looking at him as he avoided the question, Jakal said expressionlessly, “I’ve been concerned since earlier. It seems there are people outside monitoring this place.”
The subordinates who had surrounded the chief’s house and kept an eye on the inside reacted to his words.
Aware of this fact, the chief’s sharp gaze momentarily turned to the glass window.
“…The subordinates were just trying to protect me. I’m sorry, but we can’t completely trust you either. If you’re here just to gather information, can’t you leave quietly?”
As if he was about to dismiss the subordinates, he raised his hand.
Sosa unconsciously swallowed at the thought that the chief might really be trying to kill them.
The chief said expressionlessly, “Sailun, he was a defector. He didn’t perform his mission properly. And you also have a history of leaving our village once. Show us, through your actions, whether we can trust you again. Will you become the guardian of the village as the last successor of the Kelphi tribe?”
Jakal, after staring at him as if seeing through everything, finally uttered a word.
“Yes. I will accept the proposal.”
Sosa looked at him in even more surprise.
Without looking at him, Jakal conveyed his inner thoughts.
When male lead is the homewrecker
“I know she doesn’t love him.”
I’ve read the novel below twice already. Girls, I’m highly recommending it to you!
The female lead? Not a good person.
The second male lead? Not a good person.
The male lead? Willingly plays the third party, breaking up the female and second male lead’s relationship despite all the warnings from his friends—so yeah, he’s definitely not a good person either.
Basically, nobody in this novel is simple-minded or without scheming.
The female lead starts off as the male lead’s secretary, but don’t worry—later on, she takes over the company while the male lead steps back to support her. He won’t steal her spotlight, overshadow her, or dull her shine.
I love novels where men are out here snatching wigs, tearing each other down, and going to war just to win the female lead’s affection. And this is exactly that kind of novel. Most of Hai Dai Ran’s works have this dynamic. You’ll see the male characters’ emotions being pushed to the absolute extreme.
There’s even a scene where the second male lead exposes the male lead online for being a homewrecker. The brotherhood immediately gangs up on him, dragging him through the mud. I find it compelling —it completely flips reality on its head, where usually, women are the ones fighting over a man and getting torn apart by the sisterhood.
For me, female leads in the novels I read should only struggle in their careers, not in love. But if the brainless romantics in the story are all men? I have zero complaints.
I’ve pretty much read all of Hai Dai Ran’s novels and even translated all of them—her works are just my thing. I’ll slowly upload everything here. One day, when my website is official, I hope I can invite her to join as one of the star authors.
