Esmeralda had been noticeably avoiding me ever since that incident.

There were countless things from that day that seemed suspicious, and I wanted to ask her about them, but it wasn’t easy to approach her—every time I got close, Esmeralda would vanish somewhere.

One day, while I was just circling around Esmeralda without getting anywhere, a perfect opportunity finally came.

“Ptooey.”

I spat out the grass I’d been chewing and hid behind a stone wall.

Esmeralda, who had been strolling through the garden, glanced around warily for a moment before quickening her pace.

Ignoring the dirt staining my dress, I crawled determinedly through the bushes after Esmeralda.

Just as I was about to catch up, Esmeralda suddenly broke into a run. When I reached the spot where she’d last been, I saw the garden maze branching off into several paths.

“Heh heh.”

I let out a frustrated laugh and brushed the dirt off my thoroughly soiled dress.

“Do you really have to go this far? It’s not like I’m going to eat you.”

I grumbled pointlessly, but with one eye I scanned the ground, hoping maybe I’d find some footprints.

Yet, for some reason, Esmeralda’s unusually small footprints were imprinted on all three paths.

“Good grief, even your footprints are pretty.”

I stamped my own foot down hard right next to one of those small, delicate prints.
