While Hith wrestled with the first Elding, the second had already raised its sharp claws behind his back.

It was too late to defend.

My fingers stiffened with fear, but my legs moved on their own.

I dipped the tip of the fishing rod into the hearth and pulled it out—the old wood caught fire easily.

Just as the Elding was about to plunge its claws into Hith’s back—

I thrust the fishing rod in as far as I could reach.

Sizzle.

A foul, rubber-burning stench filled the air as a bright red burn seared onto the Elding’s blue skin.

With a pained cry, the Elding staggered backward.

Seizing the moment, Hith swiftly drove his harpoon into the first Elding’s belly and slashed the second one’s flesh.

Blue blood splattered everywhere. When it hit my face, the sticky mucus stung my skin slightly and overwhelmed me with a sewer-like stench.

The Elding wobbled, emitting a screech like chalk scraping a blackboard. The harpoon wound must have been deep—thick blue slime gushed out in waves.

When lightning flashed again, both Eldings were gone. They’d fled the moment their injuries became too severe to bear.

All my tension vanished at once, my legs gave way, and I collapsed onto the floor.

“Reina. Are you all right?”
