Esmeralda woke to the sound of a strong wind pounding against her window in the dead of night.

When she opened her eyes, Duke Magine stood right before her.

“Mother.”

Unlike her swift movement to sit up, Esmeralda showed no trace of surprise. Her mother’s sudden visits were nothing new, so there was no reason to be startled.

Duke Magine looked down at his daughter with indifferent eyes.

“This charity ball—why are you merely a participant instead of the host?”

“I’m sorry.”

Seeing his daughter agree without offering any excuse, Duke Magine’s brow furrowed deeply.

“Do you think I came all this way just to hear an apology?”

Esmeralda shivered slightly, as if the room’s temperature had dropped several degrees.

Yet she only bit her lip and remained silent. When she failed to answer immediately, Duke Magine clicked his tongue impatiently.

“It’s fine to let the noble lady host the party, but to lose the hosting role even to Lady Ramira, daughter of the Count? At such a crucial time, when you must solidify your position in high society—what on earth were you thinking?”

Esmeralda, her gaze fixed firmly on the floor, finally spoke.

“I merely judged it better to support the noble lady from her side.”

Duke Magine’s eyes hardened further.
