Countess Ramira wore a triumphant smile as she took the bracelet.

“Of course, I had to say it. You know it’s all out of concern for you, Duchess? If you wear such flashy jewelry at an engagement ceremony, you’re sure to draw unwanted attention.”

Despite my plain, almost dull attire aside from the bracelet, it seemed only the bracelet caught Countess Ramira’s eye. Truly, she was a countess with no progress whatsoever.

“Your bracelet, Duchess, needs to be kept in a safe place, so I’ll take it for now.”

Speaking with a mocking tone, Countess Ramira held the bracelet high as if it were a trophy and sauntered off.

As soon as Countess Ramira left, her friends quickly launched their petty attacks.

“Oh my, Duchess Reina, your dress is quite simple today.”

I nodded vaguely.

“Yes, as Countess Ramira said, it’s an engagement ceremony, so I thought I’d dress modestly.”

When I turned their attacks back on them, they cleared their throats and merely fanned themselves.

In truth, their calling me ‘Duchess’ was already a huge step forward. In the past, they’d treated me like a commoner, calling me ‘Miss Reina’ or, on particularly bold days, just ‘Reina.’

Only after it became clear that the ducal couple genuinely cared for me did they hurriedly change their form of address to save face.

Then, Countess Ramira’s mother appeared.

“Thank you for coming to celebrate my daughter’s engagement.”

It’s customary for the young countess to greet guests, but since she lingered in the lounge, the countess herself stepped in.
