I rolled my eyes, still unaccustomed to such warmth, when Peria spoke.

“Oh, that’s right. Just so you won’t worry about the broken engagement—I’ll say this upfront: you’ll never have to give it another thought. From what I hear, things with Marquis Ershian have been neatly settled.”

Though it was fortunate the engagement issue had been resolved smoothly, I couldn’t easily set my mind at ease. Peria was, after all, famously fickle—always changing her mind without warning.

After scrutinizing her expression for a while, I finally mustered the courage to speak.

“Um… Mother… weren’t you surprised by the sudden news?”

I asked tensely, but Peria replied with indifference.

“What news are you talking about?”

“I mean… the news that His Grace and I are getting married.”

“Oh, you mean the marriage proposal? I was indeed startled when the letter arrived from House Rocheter, but so what? It’s a proposal from the Grand Duke’s own house!”

‘Huh? That’s not at all the reaction I expected.’

I’d assumed Peria would immediately demand I break things off with Reus the moment she saw me.

First, because I believed Father had unilaterally accepted the marriage without consulting anyone, and second, because based on Peria’s usual behavior, that was the only response I could imagine from her.

After all, hadn’t she actively supported my engagement to Cassien solely because he was a known womanizer?

Yet now…

“You should’ve told me the moment the Grand Duke showed interest in you! Then I would’ve broken off your engagement with Cassien right away. House Ershian and House Rocheter aren’t even on the same level, are they?”
