Contrary to his own insistence that his conversation with Teron had no effect on him whatsoever, Reus reacted as if facing a cataclysm whenever even the faintest shift appeared in Roel’s emotions.

It was Teron’s words—those words felt like the only true answer to the subtle changes Roel had been undergoing.

Reus was no longer merely worried about the woman leaving the Grand Duke’s estate and vanishing from his sight; now, he feared she might leave him forever, stripping him even of the chance to see her again.

Because his nerves were constantly on edge, sleepless nights grew more frequent than restful ones, and his temperament naturally grew more sensitive.

“Where are you going, Roel?”

“Ah… nowhere, really… just…”

She was merely fetching a book, yet Roel mumbled an evasive reply, startled by his sharp, reflexive reaction to her movement.

As if he’d been waiting for that exact response, Reus pulled her into his arms. Trapped instantly, Roel offered no resistance and quietly rested her head against his chest.

Right. Reading a book isn’t really that important anyway. Roel blinked blankly, then let all the tension drain from her body.

The daily routine of the two, confined to the bedroom, was exceedingly simple.

Reus would bring meals up to the bedroom, and Roel—rising late—would nibble a bit before sitting in an armchair, gazing endlessly out the window.

Occasionally, she’d exchange a few meaningless words with the man before drifting off into a nap over a book.

Then, after dinner, once bathed and changed into nightclothes, night would already have fallen. Without doing anything of note, she’d fall asleep early, and each morning would arrive with the same heavy effort required just to open her eyes.

Though Roel felt suffocated by this unchanging day after day, Reus showed no signs of it at all.
