Early morning, the weather was unusually clear. Pailin, having slipped out of her quarters early, headed toward Ibelia with a lighter step than usual.

Lately, her mistress’s complexion had grown steadily darker. And no wonder—how could her heart be at ease when such absurd rumors about her swirled so wildly through the palace?

Moreover, the malicious gossip targeted not only Ibelia but also her one and only husband. Somehow, that seemed to weigh even more heavily on Ibelia.

Ever since becoming the Imperial Crown Princess, Ibelia had known nothing but worry—so Pailin had been overjoyed to see her spirits brighten recently. Yet tragedy had struck far too soon compared to the time she’d spent suffering. That fact alone made Pailin’s own heart grow heavy.

Pailin let out a deep sigh and tilted her head back to look at the sky. The cloudless blue expanse seemed, if only for a moment, to pierce through her stifling thoughts—but at the same time, it weighed even more heavily on her heart.

“It’s far too clear, without a care in the world.”

Pailin muttered, glaring resentfully at the innocent sky. Still, it would make a good excuse.

A perfect excuse to coax her mistress, who had been cooped up in her room, out into the garden.

Pailin entered the Crown Princess’s chamber with practiced ease. Ordinarily, she would have first checked on her mistress’s condition—especially given Ibelia’s severe insomnia—but recently, opening the windows had become her very first task.

As always, she stretched her legs toward the windowsill today as well. But just as she was about to pass the bedside, a strange silhouette flickered through the closed canopy.

Startled, Pailin halted her steps toward the window and hurried to the bed instead. Carefully drawing back the canopy, she immediately revealed the figure behind it.

“My lady!”

Pailin covered her mouth, eyes wide with shock as she stared at the center of the bed. Ibelia, whom she’d assumed was asleep, was curled up against the headboard.

Only upon hearing her name did Ibelia lift her face from between her knees—and the sight was even more startling. Compared to the face Pailin had seen the previous night, this one looked like a completely different person, swollen beyond recognition.

There was no mistaking it—she’d clearly spent the entire night awake, weeping.
