“Father, what on earth do you mean by that? What exactly am I supposed to go verify?”

Jade frowned as he repeated the question, his expression as if he’d just heard something unbelievable.

Facing his son, Edwik’s heart felt as heavy as if he were carrying a boulder. Yet Jade was the only person he could truly trust with this task.

“I told you to go to the estate and meet a man named Viscount Dwit.”

“No, not that part. The next thing you said—about suddenly raising a child and needing to confirm whether that child is of imperial blood. Did I hear that correctly?”

“…Yes. You heard it exactly right.”

Edwik exhaled deeply at the end of his words. Had there been time or if the situation allowed, he would have had Rayton investigate. But right now, there was neither the luxury of time nor the freedom to move Rayton carelessly.

False accusations against Ibelia within the imperial palace were growing louder by the day. In such circumstances, how could he possibly send Rayton to the estate? It was utterly out of the question.

“Jade… I know my words must sound abrupt. But there’s simply no one else I can entrust this to.”

“…Hah, at least give me some explanation of what’s going on. Viscount Dwit, out of nowhere? Just who is this man to have raised someone of imperial blood?”

Faced with Jade’s barrage of questions, Edwik let out a heavy sigh. He couldn’t even decide where to begin his explanation. But he knew he had to explain if he wanted Jade to act.

Edwik closed his eyes briefly, organizing in his mind all the information he’d gathered so far. Then, slowly and carefully, he began explaining it to Jade.

As the story went on, Jade’s face grew paler—so pale it turned bluish. Eventually, even the hand he’d been using to cover his mouth dropped limply onto his knee.
