Swish—the crisp sound of a neck being severed struck Caliph’s ears. Yet the horrifying, monstrous shrieks showed no sign of abating.

Caliph swung his sword again and again. His breath rose to his throat, but he didn’t pause even for a moment.

He’d lost count of how many times he’d already swung his blade. Just as he thought his wildly pounding heart might burst, he cleaved the neck of the last corpse lunging at him.

He plunged his blood-smeared sword—stained with blood whose owner he couldn’t even identify—into the ground and bent over, gasping raggedly for air. His lungs burned as if torn apart. Still, he couldn’t afford to let his guard down, so he lifted his head.

He’d aimed for vital points whenever possible, but some of them hadn’t been struck accurately. He saw them staggering unsteadily back onto their feet.

Though they hadn’t been hit in vital spots, they must have suffered grievous wounds—yet many still rose from the ground. At least, fortunately, their movements were sluggish, likely due to their injuries.

He seemed to have enough time to catch his breath. Seizing the moment, he rolled his eyes toward Eustia.

Eustia stood calmly behind the rising corpses, watching him with leisure. Her crimson-glowing eyes and unnaturally upturned lips sent chills down his spine just by looking at her.

Caliph exhaled roughly once more. The one he truly needed to fight with all his strength was Eustia—but he already felt as if he’d exhausted half his energy.

At this rate, he wouldn’t even be able to leave a scratch on her. He needed to pull himself together. From now on, he had to deal with the rest using minimal energy.

Gritting his teeth, he straightened his bent back. His entire body ached with stiffness, but he could endure this much.

If he moved as strategically as possible, he might recover some of the energy he’d already spent.

He had to make it happen. After all, once he finished off these insignificant pests, he’d need to face Eustia properly—and conserving his stamina was absolutely essential.

His ragged breathing had somewhat stabilized. He took a deep breath, then surveyed the corpses approaching him. Fortunately, it seemed he could dispatch the rest with minimal movement.

He adjusted his grip on his sword and began attacking, starting with those closest to him. This time, he didn’t miss a single vital point.
