Late in the evening, Terot took the medicine received from the palace physician and headed toward the Empress’s bedchamber.

Her mistress, who had been bedridden since yesterday afternoon due to a headache, had spent the entire night in feverish agony and still hadn’t recovered her strength even after the whole day had passed.

The palace physician who examined the Empress said it seemed to be a mild case of the flu, but Terot thought otherwise. It was clear to her that the Empress’s fever stemmed from a matter that had refused to leave her mind for days on end.

[Your Majesty… might you… might you perhaps know anything about the name Caliph?]

Her mistress’s turmoil had begun that day, when Lady Lellia first mentioned that unfamiliar name.

The moment she heard Lady Lellia’s words, Eustia’s face turned ashen, and ever since, she had remained restless. Even in the presence of the son she cherished so deeply, she couldn’t erase the look of suspicion from her eyes.

Every single moment must have been unbearably painful for Eustia. From the instant that forbidden figure—whom she had managed to forget for over a decade—resurfaced in her mind, suffering became unavoidable.

Only after confirming the bedchamber door right before her did Terot finally pull herself out of her reverie. Though Eustia had always been relatively lenient toward her, Terot knew it was best to tread carefully when the Empress was this sensitive.

Taking another deep breath, she knocked firmly on the chamber door. She offered a formal greeting, but received no reply from within.

That silence alone was answer enough for Terot. Without hesitation, she stepped inside the room.

“Your Majesty, it is time for your medicine.”

Terot stood respectfully before the bed, where only a faint silhouette was visible. Again, there was no response—not even the slightest movement beneath the covers.

Yet she couldn’t simply let the Empress skip her dose. Terot set the tray she’d brought onto the bedside table and moved a step closer to Eustia.

“Your Majesty, I know you feel weak, but please gather your strength just for a moment and take your medicine.”
