Bawin smiled as he opened the letter Aria had sent.

Inside was the pledge he’d given her, and stamped at the very last paragraph was a bright red seal, vivid as a drop of blood.

“Do you suppose Duke Herscher is aware of this as well?”

“If he knew, he wouldn’t have allowed his seal to be placed on this pledge. Had it truly been the Duke himself, he would’ve torn up the document right then and there and tried to smooth things over on his own terms.”

He was certain Duke Herscher would never have affixed his seal to something like this.

After all, this was essentially a loan secured against a property—if the borrowed sum wasn’t repaid within the agreed period, the pledged asset would have to be surrendered in full.
