Benjamin looked down at Charlotte, wondering why she was bringing this up.

Below that line of sight, a cliff stretched out. They had ridden far away on horseback, and there were no buildings in sight anymore. The imperial palace grounds were indeed vast, and this area was quite elevated.

“Is this about the Crown Prince?”

“About that remark—that it’s strange to crave affection.”

Charlotte turned to look down the path where Tatante and the delegation had disappeared. Tatante, uncomfortable with displays of affection between spouses, had taken the lead horse and left ahead of them.

“At first, I wasn’t seeking any special affection either.”

“That’s right. You even let go.”

It wasn’t about clinging to emotions but about releasing them. There was no lingering regret, no remorse.

“I told you—I’ve been whittling myself down. Carving away until I became a bland, smooth sphere, cutting off my own sharp edges. Of course, my emotions are incredibly unstable. I was never particularly good at managing them in front of Father.”

I was utterly inept with emotions. Because I didn’t understand them, I didn’t know how to care for myself. If I carved away harshly enough, someday I’d be fine. Later, later everything would be alright—so let it go. Just a little more.

“I learned how to give up on my own.”

Revenge—well, it wasn’t that I never felt the urge to take revenge on my family.
