It was the coastal cliff outside Pophuta. A monster corpse split cleanly in half with a thud. The mercenary corps adjusted their grip on their swords and wiped their cheeks.

Monsters swarmed and covered the pass. The deputy commander of the outer mercenary unit, shouldering a greatsword, muttered as if sighing in despair.

“Send an urgent report to the Imperial Capital.”

Monster corpses were tangled with the earth. Feet sank deep into the thick mud.

“They’ve gone mad and started rampaging.”

“Beneath this cliff lies the harbor directly.”

“Hold them back! Stake your lives to hold the line and protect the patrol ships! If this position falls, everything below will be trampled to ruin!”

They were buried beneath a mound of dead monsters. Monster bones formed graves, and monster carcasses fouled the soil.

“It seems they’ve been quiet all this time only to charge us all at once like this, intent on mutual destruction.”

A dead basilisk lay close by. Monster corpses were jammed into the muddy mire.

The mercenary corps burned each one with fire, and thick, acrid smoke hung heavily in the air.

“Is that lightning?”

The horizon was dark. Though the sun was setting, slowly staining the sky red, the seawater was murky with poison. Dark clouds gathered, and lightning struck repeatedly.

The mercenary corps standing on the coastal cliff walked toward the edge. Soldiers one by one removed their helmets. Hair clung to their sweat-soaked heads.
