A while later, after calming down and wiping away my tears, I exchanged with them the circumstances that had led me here. I couldn’t reveal the full story—especially not how I’d been kidnapped by a Ranker due to an absurd rumor-based article—so I merely mumbled something vague about having gotten synced on my way home from work.

Their group consisted of four people. There had originally been more, but they said the others vanished somewhere after hearing singing. Unable to tell them exactly what I’d seen, I simply stayed silent.

Among us were a female student and a male student who’d been caught in a sync on their way home from school, one man who looked to be in his late forties, and one woman who appeared slightly older than me.

Out of everyone here, the only one who had even a passing knowledge about Gates was the woman who introduced herself as “Ahn Woon.”

“Honestly, kids these days have no idea how dangerous Gates can be. They’re acting like they’re on a picnic, singing ‘Chilrellepalerelere’ as if it’s all a game.”

“Oh, must be nice being such a boomer. Meanwhile, you yourself aren’t exactly doing anything useful either.”

“What—how dare you! An adult is speaking here!”

“Come on, both of you, calm down. That’s not what matters right now.”

Ahn Woon also seemed to serve as the group’s emotional anchor.

The middle-aged man’s face turned tomato-red, and after huffing angrily for a long while, he muttered “Kids these days…” at least three more times.

“I wonder if Tae In’s okay.”

“Okay? He bolted off like that—he’s probably dead by now.”

“Hey!”

Meeting other people hadn’t improved anything. They, too, were just pretending to be fine—they weren’t truly okay.

“Unnie, I’m hungry. Don’t we have anything else to eat?”
