“I may not know about other things, but I can protect you until the rescue and strategy teams arrive.”

“……I hate just being protected.”

“But you just sensed danger like that.”

“…….”

“Not even hunters with keen intuition skills can do that. If it weren’t for you, we might have encountered monsters and struggled by now.”

“……Yeah.”

His comforting words were touching. Yet, I couldn’t quite accept them as purely kind intentions.

I covered my ears with both hands and held my breath. I didn’t want to hear the screams, didn’t want to hear pleas for help, and hated the fact that I could feel the presence of someone’s death so vividly.

Baek Yi-hyeon handed me a chocolate bar. I took it and shoved it into my mouth. It should have tasted sweet, but it was bitter.

“Did the request for help go through?”

“With an event of this scale, it surely must have. The main issue with an erosion type gate is that it continues to spread, and the aftermath is hard to handle, so they’ll want to deal with it quickly.”

“……Did the secretary get involved too?”

“The secretary?”

“Yeah, Mister Min Yoo-shin.”

“Before you passed out, I checked, and where we were was almost at the edge of the erosion. So, the place he was at probably wasn’t affected.”

“I see…….”

Was that a relief? There were more things to ask, but I closed my mouth.

How wonderful it would be if the situation were as optimistic as he described. Sadly, I couldn’t see it as positively as Baek Yi-hyeon.

If this were a minor sync, I’d understand, but with an erosion of this magnitude, hunters should have been deployed by now. The fact that there’s no trace of them suggests there’s a problem.

My particularly sensitive senses informed me of everything happening around us. Who was screaming, who was fighting, who had died, and where that deathly aura was headed.

It made no sense for an ordinary person to have such perceptions. Why am I experiencing all this? Could Yi-hyeon provide answers if I asked him?

“It’s okay. It’s okay, Shin-ah.”

His voice repeated reassuringly, as if he knew my state. Each word he spoke brought a corner of my heart to rest.

“……Yi-hyeon.”

“Yes?”

“Here, it’s an S-rank, isn’t it?”

“……Yeah.”

“I thought so.”

I had suspected as much, so it didn’t particularly bother me.

Baek Yi-hyeon is an A-rank hunter. Even without access to detailed information, he should have been able to determine up to B-rank.

This is an S-rank gate that even the hunter known as Calido couldn’t manage alone. Even if other hunters came, the feasibility of overcoming it was uncertain.

I quietly exhaled.

“Baek Yi-hyeon, if something happens, leave me and go alone.”

“……What do you mean?”

“If you leave me, you can survive on your own. There’s no need to persist just for me.”

“…….”

His brows furrowed at my words. I curled up and buried my head between my knees.

“Shin-ah.”

“It’s hard enough for you to save yourself here.”

“……Shin-ah.”

“You don’t have to, just for me….”

“Shin-ah.”

His voice, firm yet gentle, coaxed me repeatedly. I knew what he wanted to say, but I couldn’t respond with anything different.

That moment.

“Pl-please save me! Aaaaah!”

A scream erupted from somewhere.

“……Just wait here for now.”

His voice, trying to contain anger, spoke. I didn’t lift my head.

An erosion-type gate. The scale was immeasurable, but large enough to erode part of the park, streets, and even an apartment complex. Attributes of death, with undead and ghostly monsters being the main types. Estimated rank is S, possibly unknown in the worst case.

I had no vague hope that things would turn out okay. The drumming of death in my head was too intense, only bringing a surge of nausea. I wanted to escape from this place, overwhelmed by the desire, fear, and disgust, along with the terrible scent from the corpses.

“Thank you, thank you.”

The screams stopped. Lifting my head, I saw Yi-hyeon extending his hand to people.
“A hunter should have come earlier to help! What were you doing coming so late?”

One of the presumably saved people shouted. Baek Yi-hyeon’s face was brushed with an awkward smile.

“Stop it, he still helped us after all.”

“Hey, now that the hunter is here, are we all safe…?”

The battered people each began to speak their own words. The smile on Baek Yi-hyeon’s face did not fade away.

“I have a companion I need to go back to.”

“Your companion… is he a hunter too?”

“No, just a regular friend.”

“Hey, quickly do something about this situation.”

“Is it possible to do something?”

Desperation mingled in the demanding voices. Baek Yi-hyeon’s voice remained calm.

“The scale is big, so other rescue teams will arrive soon.”

“My child, my child was playing over there. Can’t you find him? My child, my child…”

I quietly approached them.

“Ah, Shin-ah.”

“……Are you going to help?”

“I don’t know. I’m not sure how much it would help in this situation…”

Someone interjected into our conversation.

“Shouldn’t you be helping?! You’re a hunter, aren’t you!”

“Ji-hoo, Ji-hoo…”

Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away

This is also on my reread list!

This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.

Definitely worth a read, y’all!

The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.

But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.

Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.

I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.

The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.

As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
