“I don’t know. But judging by the sound of the footsteps, it’s probably a Dullahan.”

“Uh, why, how?”

As I whispered a response and concentrated on the Dullahan’s footsteps, a bizarre sound suddenly filled the air.

It was like nails scraping on glass, a near-tinnitus noise that chaotically screeched through my mind. All the candles in the room suddenly lit up.

“Aaaaaaaah!”

Simultaneously, Myunghak started screaming, the sound loudly ringing in my ears.

Why? I wondered, but there was no answer. A blurred something fluttered in the candlelight. The strange ringing settled in my ears. A chill ran down my spine.

“Mom, mom? Myungyoon, Myungyoon! Please, for God’s sake. God, God…”

Why suddenly…?

In my confusion, the ringing in my ears spoke to me.

Why aren’t you affected?

Just as I felt déjà vu, all sounds ceased.

The surroundings fell into silence. The cold wind.

A man lying unconscious, his eyes rolled back. All the candles that seemed to have been lit a moment ago were now out. And then, the creaking sound of an opening door…

“…”

The Black Knight.

A Black Knight stood before me.

Clad in armor consumed by pitch-black malice, holding a helmet that glowed red. In his hand, a black sword, his gaze fixed on me.

The clanking had stopped. The monster stood right in front of me.

“Ha, haha…”

Facing death, a moment felt like an eternity. Every sense in my body awakened. The Dullahan raised its arm, and its sword followed.

I’m going to die. By that sword, I will die.

Will it hurt? Probably a lot. The cut would burn like a bruise, and the death surrounding the Dullahan will now consume me.

Hoping to survive in an S-grade Gate was ridiculous. I, I…

I don’t want to die.

“Hey, lady! Get out of the way!”

My body moved reflexively.

Gasping for breath, I looked at where I had just been standing, only to see a sword mark deeply embedded. The Dullahan effortlessly pulled out its sword and turned to look at me again.

“I found a survivor! Facing a Dullahan! There are a few ghosts too, so we need mental and light attribute support… Hey, you! If you’re not a Hunter, get over here…”

The voice that brought me back to my senses shouted again. But I couldn’t say anything.

The sensation controlling me was unfamiliar, yet familiar.

As I raised my head, the Dullahan was still there, fixating its gaze on me, the poor knight who had attempted to attack me.

How dare it attack me. But even this fairy of death was just bound by the resentment of this castle.

The Dullahan approached me slowly. A crooked smile formed at the edge of my lips.

“You’re not moving away, what…”

I won’t die. I can’t die here.

So, I…

“Judgment.”

A soft voice echoed. Accompanied by it, a blinding light flashed before my eyes.

A powerful lightning bolt, capable of burning even malice, struck inside the castle.

A tall figure approached in the light.

With just one lightning strike, the Dullahan kneeled, emitting smoke, but the approaching figure didn’t seem to want to end it there.

“I had to use it in a hurry… Hmm.”

But something was off. The moment the lightning struck, the monster seemed to shield me. As if to protect me, the red light in the helmet turned blue.

Cheon Shinwoo looked at the armored mass and spoke indifferently. A ringing filled my ears, and I felt nauseous.

“It deliberately took the hit. Shin, …are you okay?”

The approaching man, Cheon Shinwoo, extended his hand towards me, gesturing for me to grab it and stand up. I tried to grab his hand but slipped and fell.
I felt drained of all energy. Was it relief from having survived, or just weakness? Laughter escaped my lips, sounding foreign even to me.

Cheon Shinwoo frowned at me, full of discontent. What a waste of a handsome face.

My vision blurred. As I attempted to stand, embarrassment struck me, and then shock. A damp sensation was running down my hand.

“What, what?”

Cheon Shinwoo’s expression turned to one of horror.

A buzzing filled my ears. It seemed like he was saying something, but I couldn’t hear. What was he trying to say?

Just then, something surged up my throat.

Cough. Clumps of coagulated blood stained my hand.

“No…”

I can’t lose consciousness here…

“!”

My vision went black.

‘Mom! ██ ate my ice cream again!’

‘Oh dear. There’s never a quiet day. Your younger sibling can eat ice cream too, ██. You’re the older one, so be a little patient.’

‘Argh, hey. ███. If you eat my ice cream again, you’ll regret it.’

Beyond the hazy memories lay warmer times.

Despite many fights and tears, I believed they would always be on my side, my loving family.

Now unrecognizable in name or face, they occasionally appeared in my dreams.

My brother, who often looked after me in place of our busy parents. Even after they died, he didn’t abandon me.

‘I hate you, brother!’

‘Don’t make that face too often. It’s unattractive.’

‘I hate you, brother!’

‘Yeah, yeah.’

His voice faded into a distant echo.
