Due to the antics of the morning, Janobi, who had become anxious in his own skin, poured alcohol to forget the terror of that day. The official drink of the party was champagne from the Kingdom of Gallico.

As he poured one glass and then two glasses of the bubbly, fruity wine that went down so pleasantly, it was evening before Janobi realized it. He was so drunk he couldn’t properly remember his mother’s face.

When he was suddenly surrounded by people, who captured him and dragged him to the VIP seats in the center of the tent, he was shocked. But, too drunk to put up a decent resistance, he was tightly bound and forced to kneel on the bare ground beneath the VIP seats.

“Janobi de Rossi from Taranto!”

The one making the proclamation in front of him was the only sun of Etruscans, His Majesty Leo III himself.

It didn’t feel real seeing the face he’d only seen on commemorative coins talking and moving right in front of his nose. Janobi responded as if hypnotized.

“Yes, yes!”

“Ho! You can’t give a proper ‘yes’ to His Majesty the King!”

Thinking that the Gallico delegation was watching, Leo III was rougher than usual, and his followers were even stricter about formality and respect. From somewhere came a kick that hit Janobi in the back, making him bow his head to the ground.

The person who had kicked him wanted to hear the greeting “I meet the sun of Etruscans,” but Janobi was too drunk and surprised to give it. Leo III also gave up on receiving the greeting and moved on to quick questioning.

“Is it true that you shot a crossbow at Ariadne de Mare, the second daughter of the de Mare family?”

Janobi was either too drunk, or maybe because he was drunk, he was certain he shouldn’t affirm this.

“No, no! I absolutely did not do it!”

He rambled on and on.

“I was only in the tent, how could I have shot a crossbow at Ariadne’s horse’s rear?”

Cesare looked down at Janobi with contempt, as if looking at a lowly creature. It was at this moment that Ariadne timely intervened.

“Your Majesty, I am sorry to disturb Your Majesty’s heart with such a trivial matter.”

As the victim of the incident stepped forward, Leo III nodded and allowed her to speak.

“From the beginning, Count Cesare only said that Janobi de Rossi ‘shot a crossbow at me,’ but he never once mentioned whether the crossbow hit me, or grazed me, or hit the horse.”

People began to murmur at Ariadne’s pointed remark. Leo III also frowned and nodded. Janobi, forced to kneel on the ground, quickly lifted his head and gasped.

“No! It’s a misunderstanding! I just, I thought Ariadne got hit by the horse because she was walking without a horse!”

He was quickwitted.

However, there was clear evidence. Ariadne gave Cesare a nod, and Cesare, receiving her signal, respectfully placed Janobi’s arrow, which he had taken out from his pocket, in front of Leo III.

“Your Majesty, this is the arrow that was stuck in the horse’s rear.”

The arrow, still with the horse’s dried blood on it, was colored with different colors and patterns on the feathers to distinguish who the prey belonged to.

Moreover, the first arrow that Janobi had loaded that day was shot at Ariadne. It was customary to engrave the family crest and name on the first arrow, as a way of wishing for good luck.

The family crest and name of the de Rossi family were clearly engraved on Janobi’s arrow.

When Leo III, due to his old eyes, couldn’t read the name of the de Rossi family engraved on the arrow, his secretary standing next to him quickly read the name written on the arrow.

“De Rossi of Taranto…! It is indeed the arrow of the de Rossi family.”

Hearing a whisper from the attendant next to him, the secretary shouted loud enough for everyone to hear.

“The only participant from the de Rossi family of Taranto in today’s hunting contest was Janobi de Rossi!”

The audience took a deep breath.

“Why would he lie like that when it’s going to be found out so quickly.”

“He’s a hopeless guy, isn’t he? He must have shot the crossbow at someone during the hunting contest.”

“It’s not a longbow, it’s a crossbow! Good heavens! Are you insane?”

Ariadne threw fuel on the fire.

“Janovi de Rosi followed me out of the blue while I was taking a walk on the trail around the hunting grounds this morning and shot a crossbow at me from behind! This is attempted murder!”

A scream was heard from among the crowd.

“It’s a misunderstanding, it must be a misunderstanding!”

It was Lucretia. She ran in as if sliding and stood next to Janovi, berating Ariadne.

“You ended up getting hit by the horse anyway. It wasn’t shot at you! Our nephew Janovi is such a gentle and kind child, would it make sense for him to shoot a crossbow at someone! And you must have rubbed Janovi the wrong way! That’s why Janovi shot an arrow at the horse!”

Janovi barely managed to accept Lucretia’s help.

“That’s right! I admonished Ariadne a bit because she was bullying Isabella. Ariadne didn’t listen, so as a warning, I shot an arrow at the horse! As a cousin, this is a reprimand that I can give…Ugh!”
